Just watched it.

My favourite so far. Very accomplished artistically with a unique style. Stylistically I loved the meld of late 40s asthetics within the Matrix universe. Expecially liked the Philip Marlowe reference. A well-done simplistic story. Great editing as well.

The only sore spot for me was the voice acting..especially the lead. But by no means was the voice acting anywhere near as bad as The Program.

All in all, a top quality treat :)

actually it is up at whatisthematrix , but you have to solve clues. here ya go....
1. Go to www.thematrix.com and select high bandwidth
2. Click on the yellow dot on the menu bar(in the lower right).
3. Click the small box to the right of where it says low bandwidth.(right above where the box was)
4. Click the yellow box that shows up.
5. Click next to "Acess Panel 3"
6. The binary code is 01101111
Then you are there.

Taken from matrixfans.net

Way better than what I was expecting (I thought it would be like the last two-- but it rocked the last two by far.) I agree that it seems very Cowboy BeBop-ish. I wish someone would post some sort of "making of" webpage or tutorial or something for a piece like this. I'd really like to know what steps they go through to produce this stuff (live-action refs? all drawn in computer?compositing tricks?software used etc.) This piece had a wonderful blend of 3d and 2d. Great work.:bounce:

240kb/s, should have it in 7 minutes.

I love the animatrix.

-Kol.

EDIT: I really enjoyed it. The animation was superb, very anime, but still retaining a retro feel.

I actually liked the story very much, it's nothing new...just a rehashing of Neo's quest to find the Matrix, but nonetheless, I like it...I'm a sucker for film Noir detective stories.

Wow that was really really bad ..I cant belive the guys who wrote the matrix actually approved somehting that bad ..wow :shame:

The art was pretty cool though :buttrock: Though the animation and the pacing was as bad as typical japanese animation is :hmm:

this from a guy with a japanes character as his avatar. ( don't like the way mario moves huh?) I really like that whole binary code access panel thing. (it's geeky but i like, hmm what does that make me?) Talking of which i heard that they are going to make a cowboy beebop movie. I saw flash by really quick yesterday on a tv news magazine.

I've never watched "typical japanese animation", so I can't comment on that. I did think the art and story were very well done and the animation was of a very stylized method which lends it's pretty well to a film-noir type of film technique.

Definately far better than both the Program and Final Flight. The film noir look was well done. Never seen an animated film in that style, so it was a nice change of pace. I loved the retro theme as well. Wish there could have been a bit more action, since I love the way Bebop's gun fights are choreographed. At first I was thrown off that it takes place in an alternate 30's-40's world. But afterall it is the Matrix. Maybe it was an earlier version of the Matrix where the AI got their history all mixed up. Could you imagine if they really had the internet and personal computers back then, where would we be at now? Great short, hope the next ones are as good. Didn't Wanatabe direct another of the Animatrices?

I agree with GRMac13. I really didn't like the other two very much, but I thought this one was good, and a lot more "Matrixy" than the others, which just seemed like non-Matrix Anime. Only real complaint with this one was that cat throwing him his hat... what the!?

wow...umm...wow...umm...ummm...wow!

That was really interesting. Excellent blend of the BW style with a few flashes of color. The look was very consistent throughout and it was a very interesting look indeed. The animation was top-notch. Really great story, quite interesting. I really like they way they used old technology to interfase with what looked like modern technology...the rotary phone, the type-writer. Really interesting stuff

and did I mention WOW!?

I thought the style was great but found the story lacking.
It's just too short, they should have done half as many animatrix's and made them twice as long. Oh well, I'm glad they went to all this trouble anyway.
The Second Renaissance and Final Flight of the Osiris are enough for me anyway.

LucentDreams
04-05-2003, 01:43 AM
The first one and this one were fantastic, the middle two were prelude to the movie, building right up to it as it starts with them getting the message or having the message delivered by the osiris. Theyweren't as god as the first one, which overal is hard to jusdge without part two, when we really see how the matrix was made, that will be interesting.

As for this one, I don't think it was too short, It was just right, I personally didn't like the small touches of colour like the flame and the red light in the glasses, the flame had no distinct importance IMO and the redlight has no importance so why make them focuses like that? But the story was good, it reveals that they keep using these people to hunt down the hackers, causing them all to go mad/get killed/or transform into an agent (the one that disappeared) Trinity tries to save one like they did with neo, but the agents locked on his signal and tried to transform into him. so Trinity failed her mision. Granted this isn't revealing about the matrix as much as the first film was. but hey it explained a lot. I think the best are yet to come, the one about the haunted house which is a bug in the matrix, the one about the athlete who isn't gifted, he simply has discovered how to break a law in the matrix just like how neo can float and dodgebullets. And part two of the first piece, which will reveal how the matrix was made, I think those plots sound the most interesting and revealing in to the philosophy of the matrix.

yeah the one thing to consider, many of thses animatrix films are not as much about the individual film itself, one sort of problem with them, but as a whole they work to build up what the matrix is.

If you think about it the detective went throught the same thing as neo, but he didn't make it, neither did the 3 PI's before him, kinda gives a perspective as to how many people there are jsut like neo, almost ready to know what the matrix is, but very few actualy make it.

I have to say I am impressed. I really like the whole film noir feel.....and the mixing of mediums works really well. It was not what i was expecting. I thought it would have more action but I have to say....after rewatching it I really do like this one.

Out of the three movies so far, I would say this one was more down to earth. Sure, it was about the matrix but the other two (specially the first) aimed at what we perceive the matrix to be.

To be honest I enjoyed all three, each had their qualities and it’s hard to judge from either of them mainly because they are so vastly different. Overall it was good, I enjoyed it.

The look..... UBERSPIFFTASTIC!!

The pacing/characters/story..... eh. I actually liked the first two much better in that respect. This one wasn't paced right for the length it was-- even worse than Program. It might've been pretty good if it was a little longer, but the stereotypical voiceover and... what the hell was with the cheesy hat-throwing cat??

azazel
04-05-2003, 09:34 AM
Veery long download, but worth  it . IMO best episode so far. Great visual style, and I kinda like the slow pace, fits the visual style IMO. It might be a bit longer, but not much, and voice acting might be better.

BTW, this typewriter keyboard is great, I want one for myself.

Mangaka604

One of the weaker ones. I'm all for the film noir look, but why does it have to have the monotone narrative and poor voice acting?

Animation wise it was good, but I felt the agents weren't very smart. They moved at a very slow pace, just like the short, and it didn't have the right effect....c'mon, when the PI and Trinity could hold a conversation for that length of time....not right.

The cat throwing the hat? A bit of cheese I guess....but I do like the snuggling agents in the train car.

very true, but did you notice that the number on his door was 102... neo's was 101.

Well, I'm struggling to sit through the renessaince animatrix film, and I have to say, I'm pissed. I can't believe this crap got approved. It's a joke, and utter farce.

I know, it's someone's work, and a lot of effort went it, but this just really upset me. Concept, nice. I like the narrative idea, seeing the actual uprising. Good voiceover, and talented artists. But the whole thing simply wreaks of not enough thought.

Taking old classic pictures from war and injecting robots is completely uninspired. What, is that supposed to make me feel for the robots? It made me sick. The style and art seemed to change every 30 seconds, and the whole thing just feels like little children who like to draw guns and people dying/getting tortured.

I can't believe this got approved. Besides, the opening scrolling green code, this doesn't even resemble what The Matrix was about. Ugh!

Yeah, I agree with you, Natty2k2.
I thought it was just lame BS for the most part. Didn't even fit into the Matrix at all IMO. :hmm:
But I there was a thread about that one a while ago. I think this short is a lot better though.

What really bugs me is why would this detective be "saved" by Trinity?? At least Neo was wondering what the matrix was and was driven by "the question". All this detective did was get hired by the machines to do their dirty work... He solved one little riddle and he suddenly worthy to be shown what the matrix is by Trinity. Doesn't make sense to me. Also, in the matrix movie they said that they never take anyone as old as Neo usually, and here they are trying to do just that...

No. As I said, I was talking about the "renascance" earlier one. Terrible. Pissed me off.

This one Detective Story, I thought was quite cool, although a little silly at times, and parts don't make much sense. Overall, the artwork was great, it captured matrix's feel, and did what the Animatrix was supposed to. Very much like the style. TOO SHORT though. SPEND SOME MORE DEVELOPMENT TIME.
