View Full Version : Sunset Matte
eyecon 09-16-2007, 07:33 AM Hi first, I would like to tell you guys that I'm quite new to Matte Painting (this being my second matte paint). Although I do paint digitally, most of my works are either cartoonish and does not require image manipulation, or architectural. Although I know a good amount in composition, lighting and perspective, I still suffer form Artist blindess, where you have been working at a certain image for so long that you no longer can see whats wrong with it.
This image im doing is still on WIP mode. But I do need some critisms and if possible some thing that might improve my work.
Like I sain I'm not an expert but getting advises from you guys would help a lot. Im posting the original sketch and the current WIP
Oh the middle building is not done, its still under construction, I need help on the smaller ones and the overall feel... an I only tilted it done to make my work easier... I'll tilt it back again when I'm done.

Hey Eric, welcome, I think the concept is great the mood, and the composition, I like the idea of the dutch camera angle , I donīt think the city will need relfactions on the water at all, the modeling os looking so cool now, I canīt wait to see it finished.

Thanx James!
Thanks for the advise and comment. I realized that indeed due to the sheer size of the buildings. reflections of both water and lights might no longer be needed. I do think though that the buildings need a little bit of tweaking. A fellow matte painter advised me to add more depth to it. I'm still looking on how to do it though. Since I'm adding the center building which might turn out to be well lit, and will eventually become the center of the image, I might just let it stay as it is.
But like I said a while back, any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks again for the comment and I will try to finish this asap. Since I'm all pump up for another shot of Matte Paint!
And oh, I'm looking forward for another competition!

Hi Eric,
Just wanted to say that I really like the painting. The archictectural design particularly. Seems futuristic yet familiar.
Great mood and atmosphere.
Hope to see more from you.

Hi Greymouser,
Thanks for the kind comment, I will finish this image as soon as I can. The buildings has been taken form pictures of great cities around the word, thats probably why they look familiar, I just edited them in such a why that they look different yet structurally sound. Blame to my architectral background.:D
Anyway, I hope to see more of your work too, and see more of you here in cgsociety!

Hi!
An update to my Sunset matte. I'm still quite far form the final goal but...
I have tried to express depth, retouched the sky, moved the sun and finally finished the modelling/texturing of the middle building. It still needs a lot of tweaking though, any comments will be appreciated!

Another update,
All comments will be appreciated, I'm a little bit concerned with the falls and the rock in front though, it seems like I have blanked out on how to approach it...

I like this update. I prefer the colours and the water reflection is great. I think the rockface works well, but the waterfall is abit odd as you have a very modern structure, then a grassy waterfall coming off of it. But i think it fits in that position well, just abit of a culture contrast.
Inless thats what you wanted :) but overall i'm loving this project, its really creative, and has been executed well.

Hello ColdReign,
It is a bit odd isn't it? Maybe the title of the work might solve that. The Image is titled as "MALL" . I'm trying to create a futuristic version of a huge mall that has everything. The area that has the waterfalls and a few green below that is the Greenery part of the mall. If you look back further, you will see that their is an odd architecture featuring a really present-like buildings, that will in turn be part of the historical/theme park area of the mall.
Imagine an extremely huge mall that has a spaceport, seaport housing etc. A mall where all you need is literally within its walls.
I hope that clears it up HAHA! I plan to hold back on the title but i guess you guys need to know it. And putting a bit of oddity sometimes can create a spark of interest...
Once again thanks for the comment. :)

I hope the end result is how you imagined :)

nice update I like the waterfalls a lot, it gives a great sense of scale, I also think the mountains on the right look too sketchy, and you will need some more attention to detail on the texture on those big towers, so far all the rest of the city has a strong redish - oange color and the main towers have more green on them check that out ( also the mountain ) that maybe is no correct in depth or scale , I also think you have too much detail on the water highlights and too blury or low detail on the sun and surrounding clouds

It all works for me. Now if you can just add those ships in the skyhttp://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gif

Wow, really like the updates. The matte is coming along really well.
If I may, I have one tiny issue with the mountains on the right side. They seem to sit too evenly on the horizon line. Maybe some tiny waves lapping against the rock wall might integrate it better or break up the straight line at the base.
All in all, great work though.

nice image it came along very good, eventhought I would fix some issues here, I would try that all the background illuminated windows were much brighter, as bright as the main towers, that would look more photorealistic, also some highlights over the water coming from the most important light sources from the city , to make it more dynamic I would add some little and big ships around the city, below the sun you have some clouds that look wrong, those clouds have darker black levels than the furthest buildings, try to low dow that dark clouds so they look with the right aereal perspective, I also think you need more detail in the big towers highlights and hull surface, try to break that perfect gradient coming from the lighting , if you know what I mean, add some blocks or lines to break that , add more motion blur to the flying ships, I hope this helps now

What a great piece of art!
A couple of things stand out a little to me, (but be aware Im not a matte artist, also I have no painter skills either ;)).
The centre structure lighting looks a little off to me, does'nt quite match the surrounding, that and the support structures that enter the water, dont have any level of white foam/spray around them.
Quality work, and well done on the second place, congrats man!!

Hi!
Thanks James and Ragu!
Well said both. Those are very useful criticism. I will try to remember them.
James, if you have not mentioned it, I would never have seen that the clouds did look odd. Mmmmmm, I might put more time on it. I did want to creat smaller ships and reflections but time just killed my vision, I might go back to this image again and put all those details to enhance it more.
Thanks Ragu, you do have quite a good point, I will put that in mind next time! For now its onwards for me and to create another matte!

This image really came a long way. It looks great! The more I look at it, the more I wanted to make a couple comments FWIW, even though you say you're done with it. :)
Compositionally, I think it could have been more powerful to have the distant city falling out of frame to the right (where the cliffs are) with the skybridge extending out to the tower island, like it's some sort of super-high-tech resort island. The towers have such a dramatic outline that would have looked even better against the cloudy sunset instead of the busy buildings. But that would be a pretty big overhaul.
The ships are all about the same size and seem placed as an afterthought. The ship on the left-middle is about the same size and detail level as the platform thingy on the left building tower. And if that's a landing pad, why not have a little ship taking off or landing from it?
The top of the waterfall would be more shadowed where the island blocks the sun. Someone already mentioned adding subtle whitewater to the legs where they meet the water. Good suggestion, but I would also add some weathering at the waterline of the legs where the tide rises up and down them.
Anyway, don't take this the wrong way. This is a fantastic image that could be even better with just a little more work. Oh, and I absolutely love the little neon downtown area between the towers. Great touch!

Well Said Artbot!
Thank you very much and I assure you, your comment and criticism appears more like a favor and a huge help to me. It feels like I'm being mentored here in the forums and that is exactly what I wanted, to learn from those with more experience and to get feeback on what I might have missed. All of your comments and suggestions I compiled on one file which in turn I usually try to read everytime I create new images. I've learned more this passed few weeks than the few months I tried to study the artform of mattepainting.
I also realized that there is a huge difference between traditional artwork from photo-real renders.
My gratitude once again goes out to all of you! Thank you and I hope I can make a better image next time!
