View Full Version : Material/Render Settings for canvas size
methycal 09-15-2007, 10:31 PM Hi all.
After a long time of using Cinema4D for small canvas (1600x1200 max) I'm having problems when I want to go even further.
I don't do animation at all , I'm making my models on c4d and I postwork in Photoshop.
Problem is , if I want to create a big canvas (50x70 cm) the rendering comes out in terrible quality. It really looks 'CG' even with just using shaders with no textures at all.
What do I need to do make my renders work at big sizes? (except of using hi-res textures, I know that.)
Thank you in advance.

When rendering at larger resolution you have to deal with the consequences that models and textures require substantially more detail themselves (unless you're into the ultra clean CG look). It's much easier to get away with less detail at lower resolutions, but what makes an image work are the subtle variations, the roughness in fact, computers make things too perfect, unfortunately it means putting in a huge amount more work as you increase the destination size.
Perhaps if you could post a link to something in particular where you're having a problem then people could give you some more direct feedback as the terms you've used are a little bit on the diffuse side.

I see. thanks for your input but I don't think the model is really the problem since I've even tried the same materials in plain spheres..
True, diffuse and careful layering gives a much better look in big dimensions but still not what I see in the Editor Render View.
I wonder if Bodypaint has anything to do with this? Should I paint my models using this instead of materials? Thanks again!

hi
when you have a big resolution and you want a good quality, try to use procedural textures, they are calculated with maths, so you'll not get horrible pixels
