View Full Version : The perfect Maya website

I've been toying with the idea for some time of making a completely Maya centric website. While the 3DSMAX and Lightwave communities have many app specific websites, there are relatively few for Maya.
Also, web tutorials are rather far in between. With the release of Maya PLE and the recent price cuts, I think the time is ripe for such a project.

Therefore, I want to ask you all, what do you want from the ideal Maya site? What would Maya site utopia be for you? Think big and radical thoughts ;)

Your suggestions will be warmly welcomed

Great idea!
I'd love to see a Maya community site with tutorials, free plugins, free scripts, news and also a user gallery. If possible a subdomain webpage like 3dluvr have for users, but I do not know what possiblities you have, just an idea.

we Maya users lack in these commnuity sites (highend3d is about the only one I can come up with now) so this is a really good idea!

Good luck with the project!

I would like to see a site that has lots and lots of tutorials. And of course all the other stuff Veqtue suggested together with some good wellvisited forums.

I think itwould be good to have a section devoted to people who are doing amazing things with the software. Sections dedicated to amazing animators, modellers, dynamic users etc. It would be a good inspiration point as well as allowing us to learn something.

oh, plus all the turorials, scripts shaders and all that.

Thanks for the encouraging feedback everyone, shouldn't be a problem to incorporate your wishes so far.

Grooveholmes: do you mean a growing shader library or an overview of shader properties and shading networks for specific uses? The first is in the plan, but the second might be an interesting option.

DrAdamDinosaur: Providing these Mayagods are willing, we do want to interview as many people as possible that are doing amazing things with Maya. Not just artists, but also plugin writers and mel scripters.

At the moment we're working on a powerful and flexible backend to allow this site to be updated and grow easily.

Thanks again, and keep those ideas flowing :)

:) :) :) You can look at the Spanish Maya Community at http:\\www.esmaya.com . News, Resources, tutorials, and mailing list, all for the spanish-talkers, and ... maya only. ;) Great site. :D :D :D

Deepray, thanks for the link, looks like an excellent site tho babelfish doesn't exactly make it easy to read ;)
Nice to see such a seemingly active community, maybe we can work with them in some way eventually.

I really think that's a good idea....but with a twist....it would be nice to have the Maya-Gods go over certain things/methods that they use in order to pull off that desired effect ( whatever that particular effect might be ).....I see tutorials on the web for Maya...but b/c everyone is different --so therefore we do everything differently--....it would be a good idea to have more than one tutorial showing you how to do the samething ( only different  ).....I also like the idea of having a sub-site for members that would like to show their work.....perhaps you might not have room for all of us....so a contest can be used to determine who gets web space or what not.....--just a thought--
other than those two I truely think it's a wonderful concept.....sounds very promising...

Both of those man, what I meant by "Evolving" is that the library shouldn't really remain the same. As people have updates or a better faster way of doing something feel free to throw it up.

I think a good strong overview of properties and networks is really needed. That's something that is missing from the documentation that a/w has released.

I would be willing to contribute in any way as well:wip:

I think that a site dedicated to Maya users is something that has been needed for a long time. One thing to make your site a bit different from the rest might be the way you design your tutorial section. If you were to have links to all the tutorials that most of us have seen, while having a section in which the users can submit their own tutorials. Have it divided into folders from modeling, animation, lighting, rendering... Then have sub folders in each catagory listing every type of modeling, animation, lighting, and rendering capabilities that can be utilized in Maya. This would allow for an organized Maya tutorial resource that I'm sure thousands would bookmark. I've found that everyone has their own style and process of creating pieces in Maya. Some work better than others, but by having every aspect of the program online, anyone could become a master. Oh, and one last thing... If you create this site, make all the tutorials print friendly. Nothing irritates me more than finding an extremely useful tutorial that doesn't print correctly.

Go for it...and if u need help..just ask...MAYA SITE - MAYA SITE!!!

I agree with Grooveholmes and digitalScoprion. There must be a place for shaders and new technics and everyone who wants to share anything new that he discovers will have to be able to post it. Shaders, Subdivision modeling technik, new rigging technik..anything...Everybody help this guy...WE NEED OUR SITE and he MUST be able to provide..(sorry for my bad english).

Vamos!!!!

When someone is planning on actually building the maya website, id be glad to help.
We could also , maybe, come together in a chat and plan the whole site, make a flowchart for instance...
Idea?

Thanks for overwhelmingly positive response, I hope that we can live up to your expectations. So far I think it won't be a problem to implement most of your wishes. Except maybe the members' subsites due to financial limitations. We have put it in the "future possibilities" list though. At the moment we're just hoping that we can get advertising enough to pay for the hosting expenses as we need a lot of storage space and bandwidth.

Just to keep you updated, we're working on an xml based content managment system to form the basis of the website. Parallel to that a visual look and navigation system is being made that will be finalised after the backend is finished. We're taking some care to plan thoroughly and make the system as flexible as possible, because the initial feedback will likely lead to some changes before the site stabilises.

Thanks again and here's hoping Mayaplanet.com will satisfy all your Maya needs and wants :)

:) Why of course we have progress, at the moment there is almost a complete layout for the site. It needs to be integrated with the backend using XSLT, then filled with content.
I'd like to get in touch with artists and MEL scripters soon for the gallery and resource sections, there are tutorials to be written and such, but on the whole things are moving along nicely :)

this is the best news Ive heard...a MAYA only site...kickass!!

Be sure to have a range of tutorials from beginner to internediate to advanced.

The easier it is for people to get access to learning material the larger the community will grow.

EXCELLENT IDEA!!!

Its a great Idea, but there is already WWW.SimplyMaya.co.uk. They have all sorts of catagorys and the guy who runs it has a V.I.P section(you have to pay to get in) It has some AMAZING tutorials!! The only way to beat these guys is to do some great tut's and make it all free!!! Good Luck!! :)

Keep it up guys !

hey dude,
a tutorial section where a topic would be chosen (product, human, scenery) and all who wanted to participate would be able to do so...so we'd all give our approaches(techniques, plugins, scripts, renderers etc),progress and comments as we go along/learn along.those who are late can easily catch up on the wealth of threads gone by.
so say for exhample we decided to model brucelee(i'm a fanatic ;) ).first we'd provide refrence pics then discuss methods(nurbs, subd, nurbs=>subd),and scren grab our own progress and post along(the most generous could post a screen capture). when we attain a certain level of form(blocking) we vote the best model and that model is availiable for download for every one to rip apart and build upon...and continue.so we then move onto texture and then animate    ...same rules and principals.
i think if we can go through this(it may take a month or two) it would be the best of tut on the planet since we'd be learning about everything gradually as we go along...apart from the optimization tips for short cuts customizing, file managment(auto save/backup script, replacing user prefrences).etc the whole thing...
thanx for listening

This sounds like an awesome idea; it seems like everything maya related is either years old, or members only. Not everyone has the kind of money to be able to subscribe to all the useful sites.

It'd be really great to have somewhere to trade tips, scripts and shaders.

I'm well up for it, basically.

Hey all,

There is a similar thread going over at 3DBuzz, there is a user there that is setting up www.MayaCG.com and he also has some very cool ides..(like using a HotBox type navigation!!!)..maybe a collaboration of efforts??? Make a mass mother of a site brimming with tutorilas and quality Maya gear!!!!

Heres the link to the thread: http://sv1.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14490

See what happens...it would be worth a shot at a joint effort for the good of the site!!!

Cheers

Hi Im kevin, Admin from Simplymaya.com

Cheers for the word there guys.... I have been building a maya only community for a good while now, last week we had a new look web site go up which has some nice features.

For example: A gallery area where you can upload your images
A mel / plugin area - this is up now and we will be adding loads of mels and plugins over the next few weeks. It will soon have an upload feature on it so all you guys can upload you own.

It has a shader area as well, same as above... We will add more shortly and you will also be able to upload your own!

yep we do have quite a few free vids and are working on some new ones now, we also have a VIP area that is points based.. This area contains 22 hrs of video tutorials!

we have designed this area to keep the site alive...rather then have to get sponsors / pop ups etc..

As any guy from here knows - bandwidth costs are high so we have to pay for the site somehow,

We have loads of tutorial links and some of the nicest guys I have ever met... Mike Mckinley is one of the moderators there who really knows his stuff and always willing to help as is Rage and Craig Daughtrey who really know there stuff to: http://www3.sympatico.ca/sdaughtrey/

These guys make some of the VIP videos as well.

Any ways pop on by...the site looks great and works great aswell! (yeah i know ...i would say that lol)
