I am totally inspired by all the great artists here in CGTalk and most of what i have learnt today about Art and CG is mainly from CGTalk by observing the works of other artists and reading the tips and suggestions shared by them.. i am thankful to all those artists who are very kind to share their tips and suggestions with others

This Sketchbook Thread for me is going to be like a personal journey towards becoming an Artist with all the Creative Freedom that will help me bring my imaginations to existence..

Thanks Magdalena, Anand, Dhruvsm and Arun for the encouragement..
i will post some updates soon..:)

These days, i only get time during weekends for my personal works, i will try to post some updates atleast once in a week and since i am using AMD 1.8 GHZ with 512 mb RAM,
the system becomes very slow as it reaches 500,000 Polygons.. hence i will have to plan my learning process accordingly..:)

Hey Nitin!... good start, man!... I like your hatching..!
critique: I think you are having a bit of a problem with the vertical alignment of nose/mouth/chin. I would suggest that you flip the image horizontally quite often while you paint to prevent your eyes from getting used to the image and accepting any distortion as normal.

The concept is about Ashoka The Great.. the invincible emperor returns with great powers to conquer the new worlds.. establishing his Four Lions as the symbol of Ashoka's rule over the four directions..

http://worldofnamnocilis.com/sketchbook/2D/asokalion.jpg

Just playing around in photoshop :)

anandpg
11-03-2007, 11:19 AM
Hey Nitin! good start on the painting.. I think you need to work on the composition.. did you intentionally place the key elements of the painting where they are right now, or did you just randomly spread them about?

I wonder what kind of Ashoka you read about!!! I thought he tried to spread the word of Buddha around the world... From the painting, I get the impression that you are trying to make him out to be an evil force bent upon destroying the world!! Or else, did you mean the war-crazy Ashoka before he turned Buddhist? In that case, the four lions don't figure!

namnocilis
11-03-2007, 12:03 PM
i totally agree with the fact that ashoka spread the words of buddha and peace, i am not doubting his character or trying to change the fact..

this is just my imagination that the ashoka after his death.. ascended to a new state with supernatural powers but the powers were so incredible that he slowly became addictive.. and then the Dharm Ashoka slowly began to transform back into to a brutal emperor which he was once earlier, then known as the Chand Ashoka. Only that this time he is unstoppable with his great powers and wants to conquer the whole universe..

namnocilis
11-07-2007, 04:36 AM
This is the continuation of my Ashoka concept.. Necromancer who challenges the invincible Ashoka with his sorcery and witchcraft.. we can hear the drums of war begin to roll and thunder..

Hi nice works.
I have some critiques about your last work, I hope they are helpful:

I think the head is too small, or the torso too long.
The staf seems to be goig trough his hands, as the shaft is so large, his hand should be more opened around it.
His arm also seems to be going down in a too steep angle, so it seems to "attach" to the body lower than it should.

A suggestion, use a photo, with a digital camara is very easy to get reference by putting yourself in that position.

cheers

Hey man, looking good... I always find it easier to put in some proxy spheres for eyes when sculpting faces.. It makes it easier to work on the area surrounding the eyes, which in turn helps develop the rest of the face :)

Hi namnocilis, your last head sculpt is looking good. I think you need more work on the shape of the eyes though, try to get some reference pictures of anyone..or even look in a mirror to try and establish taht shape better.
I'm pretty sure there's a way to put ref pics into zbrush..check their forums/site.

i agree, its a horrible copy.. i hope anand forgives me for making such a terrible copy..
some of the mistakes i found was.. the hand is very big and also the angle of the head didn't come exact.. i also made a mistake by not keeping enough space for drawing the other hand.. so i drew an eye instead .. just posting it because i can trace my progress after few years..

Hi ...:) Nitin

Been enjoying your thread and progress.....I like that last head sculpture that your working on ..
About the changes that happen with age to the human face and head...
.....DRAWING THE HUMAN HEAD by BURNE HOGARTH...is the book that your looking for..great chapter with great drawing demonstrations in there on that subject of ageing along with words that describe exactly what takes place..from birth to ancient....GREAT BOOK...You can get it on the internet/Google.. and not very high priced...just type in his name...:)
You might try doing some relief sculpting on the ..flat plane tool in Z BRUSH...GREAT for doing face studies or whatever,..gives you more chances to get used to the sculpting tools ect. and doesn't use as much memory/rams as the other tools used for full 3d..just a passing thought.....Check out the sketchbook thread of...Nielot , a couple of spaces below yours in here...he is doing some nice head and face relief sculpting using that flat plane tool in Z BRUSH.
Keep up the nice progress..looking forward to seeing more of your work...

thank you very much Glenn, i love the idea of relief sculpting.. just checked the Nielot Sketchthread, amazed to see the kind of sculpts done on a flat plane.. with all the excitement i jumped to start some relief sculpting.. but i feel i am missing something, is there any specific approach? here is the 2 sculpts..

started with a flat plane

Hi ...Nitin..:)

I have been playing around with the flat plane tool for a couple of months now...check out my CG portfollio..the first few images..HANDS were done using that flat plane surface tool,...and also the last image in my sketchbook thread started with a flat plane tool surface that I gouged into with the clay tubes brush set on subtract instead of add in the settings at the top of the screen...Then I just added other 3D stuff onto it, and also another flat relief sculpture with hands on it, was added on top of it...the possibilities are endless.....:)

The way I have been going about it is..

I go to PREFERENCE at top of screen...select...then select mem/memory on the menu that comes up, and then slide all the sliders in the mem window all the way to the right, and then press compact memory.

I then select the flat plane tool...make it a polymesh 3d tool and bring it onto the screen...SELECT...EDIT
Then I sub devide it 4 or 5 times.

Then I go up to the top left of the screen and select the BRUSHES MENU...and move that menu over to the right of the screen ..by pressing that little open circle thing at the very top on left side of the brushes menu.

I then enlarge the flat plane tool so that it is bigger than the screen, by using the scale setting at the right of the screen...this gives me a big canvas to work/sculpt on.

In the brushes menu,...I like to start with the ..CLAY TUBES BRUSH...good for laying in bone, muscle and tendon.

The move brush is also great for shifting things around.

The smooth brush...is great for smoothing and refining...you can also smooth out an area, and then go back on top of it with the clay tubes brush again...which has a nice effect.
It also can act like an eraiser...

Try out all of those brushes, they can do some really amazing things, and add varity to the sculpt. Just like varity of brushstroke is good in a painting, it is also good in a sculpt.

Hope that these directions are useful to you..it's just the way that I have been playing with that flat plane tool,..there are probably a lot of other ways...but like I said, it's all new to me also...:)

HAVE FUN, AND TAKE CARE

Hey Nitin! Great to see you post something after sort of a gap...! Sculpting facial features is a really good idea.. kinda like practising scales on the guitar..:D .. you should also practise sculpting hands and feet when you get bored with the facial features. :)
Have a look at Joel Mongeon's SB thread for inspiration. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=473361

wow! thats a very detailed explanation.. thanks Glenn, after looking at your latest relief sculpture of a guy sitting on a rock, i got some idea on how i should be giving a 3d feel on a 2D plane..

yesterday i was just trying out the clay tubes brush.. for some reason i found it very strange and hard, clay tubes is giving that layered feel all over and also when i want some extra volume on some area, i have to brush it a number of times to get the required volume.. even though i increase the intensity to 100.. but i found it really nice for creating rocky surfaces,
but after looking at some of your relief sculpts you did using clay tubes.. i have nothing no words to say about claytubes..

Hi...Nitin...:)

Nice job on those two hands..
Forshortening is is a little tricky at times for sure..It has mostly to do with the overlapping and interlacing of shapes that are turned into volumes through the use of light and shade...In those two books that I mentioned earlier...DRAWING DYNAMIC HANDS, and DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING, both by BURNE HOGARTH, ..He gives detailed drawings and descriptions of all the princables involved in forshortening..I myself have never seen better descriptions and examples of that subject in any instructional books..Deffenitly an invaluble resorce to have at hand in your personal library...will eleminate all of the guess work for sure..:)

About the clay tubes brush in Z BRUSH...Building up layers upon layers and smoothing in between the buildup is what sculpting with clay is all about when done traditionally, so it should also be that way in digital,..but that's just my personal opinion though.
I find it very useful to start with a bone shape that is created with the clay tubes brush, and then adding the muscles and tendons on top of the bone,... building them up, layer upon layer as I go along...The clay tubes brush creates to me what looks like muscle and tendon, and that's the reason that I enjoy using it.
That's the way I do it when working with real clay and a wire frame which resembles the underlying bone structure.
With the digital relief sculptures, I find that it is fun and more of a challenge and learning experiance to try to simulate the traditional technique of sculpting with clay...layer upon layer of clay,..building muscle and tendon upon bone..:)

Anyway,..there are many many ways to sculpt, and no way is ever really wrong, if the results are good..:)
Finding a method and technique that is comfortable to you and expresses what you want to express, and and how you want to express it,.. is what it's all about..:)

Really looking forward to seeing more of your work, and the progress that comes with it....KEEP POSTING...

Thanks Glenn, after spending sometime exploring and experimenting with claytubes, i find it very interesting and i m able to get some nice results esp. after combining it with certain alphas, also found it very useful for sculpting hairs..still need to explore more. i love the explanation you gave about thinking in terms of traditional media when sculpting digitally..

Hi ..Nitin..:)

Nice start on that childs head..

On the relief sculptures.
I found that with the clay tubes brush, it makes some real looking rocks when you add alphas on top of the clay tubes strokes, then go back into it with the other sculpting tools like the MOVE brush, Blob brush, Inflate brush ect, and then put one of those nice looking marble looking squres in the TEXTURE section at left of screen, on top of those underlying sculpted strokes,..using the square DRAG RECT brush I think it's called, inbetween the DOTS and FREEHAND brushstrokes at the top left of screen, in the BRUSH STROKE section, to cover the big areas of the rocks with the texture.
In the Texture setting at the right of the screen, press DISABLE UV,..this lets you just texture the specific areas that you want to texture, without texturing the whole surface of the canvas with the texture that you have chosen....I just found that out yesterday while playing around with the relief sculpture that i'm working on posted in my thread...Thought I would pass it on to you, just in case you weren't already aware of it..it might be useful to you in the future, you never know..:)
Anyway,..keep up the great work and progress..

Thanks Glenn! i just tried the technique you told for sculpting rocky surfaces.. i really didn't know that i had to disableUV to be able to texture specific areas using the DragSelect tool, this is exactly what i was looking for when i was trying out zbrush texturing.. but then i was using Zproject technique.. I also love the fact that Zbrush automatically converts the color images to greys when imported as alpha.. saves lot of time doing that manually in photoshop :) Thanks for sharing..

Thanks Anand, that baby sculpt was a quick doodle from imagination.. didn't use any reference, i too felt that it is very tricky and interesting to sculpt babies.. will sculpt again using references for better understanding..

Thanks Selphoo, when drawing drawingforeshortened objects i was just trying to draw what i see.. i just realised that there are lot of nice techniques for drawing fore-shortened objects after glancing at some of the pages from "Burne Hogarth book on Dynamic Hands"..still need to explore it

Hey Nitin! good work! I haven't had occasion to observe goats very closely(probably because I once got chased by one while a child :D ) but the ears look a bit odd to me- like you can't really say which way they are turned. ..and the lower eyelid looks kinda scraggly. Thanks anand, i too haven't observed goats much in real life, must observe a real goats from now then i will get more idea.. i just started sculpting with a goat image which i had found online, i couldn't clearly understand how the ears were exactly positioned since it was just one view so i just tried roughly placing it.. there is so many thing that are coming into attention when i am actually sculpting, never really observed a goats ear till now..
now i am curious to know more about goat anatomy and behaviours.. feeling happy that i am learning new things..:)

Good work! nice proportions over-all, though the nose looks a bit too big(its a matter of choice, of course). I think a bit more work is needed on the eyes and lips... they look like they are just drawn in there - probably because the eyelids are so thin and the cupid's bow seems to be a groove instead of a ridge. Good to see that you are sculpting every day! Keep it up!

Hey Nitin, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook :D

Really liking all the speed sculpts you've got here. I love the look of the last few, might be cool to push the whole stone sculpture look even more.

Very nice stuff man!

Hi...Nitin...:)

I'm not qualified to judge the technical aspects of your 3D, but it looks good to my eye anyway..:)...I like the facial expression on that last one..intense.

Keep up the study progress...looks like each one of your sculps is a step up and better than the preceeding one, ..which is what it's all about.
TAKE CARE, and looking forward to seeing lots more of your work and that study progress that's showing in it.. :)

Awesome!! Way to go buddy!!:buttrock: You are on to it now!!:scream: You oughta get some reference for those wrinkles on the corner of the mouth, though.. I don't think they're likely to get those "S" curves there. Check the shape of the tongue.. looks kinda wooden right now.. gotta get some character into it. Anyways, I am mighty glad to see you practise so consistently; you are improving real quick, man!! Keep it going!

HEY...Nitin..:)

MONSTERS..

If you want some good references for studying emotions, expressions, frightening states of mind ect.,...you might check out medievel art of Europe..Those old churches are a treasure trove of intense states of mind which have a realism to them that is lacking in current times, for the simple reason that the montrous images, emotions ect. that they portrayed back then, were very very REAL in the minds of the artist who portrayed them.

Just a passing thought that might be of some help and use to you..:)

Keep up the great work and progress...:)

@anandpg: Thanks Anand! i will have a look at some references.. but in this case actually i was trying to get it as close as possible to the devil dog concept by milesteves

@SpiritDreamer: Thank you so much for the info Glenn! i tried googling the medieval art churches but couldn't find what i was looking for.. i tried searching with different tags, but wasn't lucky:sad: i am looking for such references with intense emotions, could you please tell me how to find good references on mediveal art of europe..

@retartedmonkey: Thanks Michael! i am glad you liked it

@htodi: Thanks buddy!

I have not been able to sculpt anything from last two days due to frequent powercuts and rains, so will sculpt something new on weekends until then i will do some studies and sketching.. btw, i purchased some clay :) sculpting in real clay is much more relaxing.. trying the methods i do in zbrush onto real clay ( Digital > Analog ) i am kind of learning it backwards now..lol! :p

Hey ..Nitin..:)

You might check out the sculptures that are all over the cathedral of Notra Dame and also the Last Judgement painting by Michelangilo, and even further back in time, is the guy who Michelanglo got his idea for that painting from, can't remember his nane off hand.
Hieronymus Bosch....and Bruegel capture the thought and expressions of those dark times pretty good aslo.
Maybe google medievil gargoles...I'm not sure how to search for them on the computer,...I usually go to the public library and just browse the art section..Boston has a great library with a ton of outstanding art books, which usually have whatever i'm searching for somewhere within them...plus when I just browse, I usually find the unexpected, which turns the journy into an adventure..:)
Looking forward to seeing some of your real life clay sculpture...it's really nice when you can actually touch the thing that your creating, while your creating it..The best sculptures were created before their was electricity and computers.:)

@SpiritDreamer: Thanks! Great to join you again in these sketchthreads.. actually i found some references of sumo wrestlers but somehow i find them less interesting and they look more like balloons..hehe! i wanted something interesting going around like lots of flabby folds etc.. sometimes i see it in movies and all but now i don't seem to find similar references, seems like obese people hesitate to show their bodies :hmm:

Hi Nitin..:)
Just popping in to see what you've been up to..I was wondering how your Zsphere sketching is coming along..It's a great NEW technique for doing very quick muscle and tendon placement studies..Using the #3 Zsphere sketch brush,...in conjuction with the #4 smooth brush gives a really natural feeling of muscle and tendon which can then be pinpointed and attached to the underling Zsphere skeleton using the MOVE setting and placed in it's proper location, from it's origin to it's destination.
I find that making the muscle big/oversized to start with allows for it to be it's propper size once it is smoothed out, which causes it to shrink in the process of smoothing.
Anyway, you've probably figured that out already, just thought it worth mentioning.
Hope you post some of your Zsphere sketches in here,... I hate being the only one to be doing and showing experiments and explorations in this forum with this amazing new technique of Zsphere sketching.. :)

@SpiritDreamer: Hi Glenn, the #3 and #4 smooth brushes are really awesome.. actually i liked #4 brush so much that i was not using any other brush and now when i read your post here for the second time while replying.. i suddenly realised the awesome power of the #3 to stay pinned in the corners, thanks a lot Glenn for reminding me..:):lightbulb i did some zsphere sketch doodles while experimenting but most of them are not good enough to post here and i am still trying to get a hang of it, but i will post one muscle study which i did today morning.. one thing i realised during the process is to keep the zsphere skeleton very thin so the muscles can be attached to build mass which i totally forgot in the beginning and found it really annoying while making leg muscles.. btw, these days i am trying to learn polypainting in zbrush so i can also texture my models, will try to post some more zsphere experiments every once in a while.. Thanks a lot Glenn for support!

@anandpg: Thanks a lot!
