View Full Version : garbage on the screen, constantly || can't select variants when palettes are hidden

When painting with Painter X.1, I notice that there are artifacts on the screen constantly. Because of this I'm constantly hitting tab twice or moving the screen around to clear them. I'm hoping it's a video card/driver issue but so far I haven't been able to fix the problem or pin it down. Anyone else having trouble with this?

Also, when I have palettes hidden and try to select a brush variant with right click it won't select it. I have to tab the palettes back in, select the brush, then tab them back out. This is annoying.

My (crappy) machine:

P4 3.0Ghz HT
2GB DDR400
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro
Windows XP Pro SP2

I've noticed those bugs too.

I used to think it was just my computer or video card acting up. But then I took the same file to work on at work and the same artifacts pop up too. Usually I just flip the canvas a couple of times and it fixes itself, but it still get's annnoying.

If I understand you right, I get artifacts when I zoom in and out using Ctrl>+ or Ctrl>-. Using the scaling slider eliminates the problem, but sure would be nice if the keyboard shortcuts would work the way they're supposed to.

Try clicking the lower right corner of the image window, as if you're going to click and drag it to enlarge or reduce the size of the image window. I've found this to be the quickest and easiest way to refresh the image window.

I just did a test in Painter X.1 and right-click in the image window brings up the contextual menu listing brush variants in the current brush category, even when the Tab key was hit to close all palettes.

I work in fullscreen with no palettes, I hate having window bondaries and crap everywhere.

The context menu comes up fine, the problem is that it doesn't work  I can see the variants but clicking on them doesn't select them, it just closes the context menu and doesn't change the brush.

Painter 6.1

I've been trying to get my hands on Painter 6 for a while now, a lot of the Gnomon instructors still use that version. If anyone sees it for sale online anywhere please let me know.

Anything I do that alters the viewport causes the problem. Panning, rotating, zooming, you name it, it all poops on my screen. I wonder if the Mac version has this problem, I've heard that Painter runs better in general on Mac. I plan on building a Hackintosh in a few months, so maybe we'll see...

I almost never use Screen Mode toggle (Ctrl/Command+M).

Instead, I Maximize the image window. Try that and see if it helps. (I did my test with the image window only partially stretched larger, not in Screen Mode or Maximized.)

Maximized and stretched mode don't seem to change the brush variant issue, the screen artifacts I'm not so sure about. It seemed like the artifacts got worse the more I drew, I'll test it out more rigorously tomorrow. Thanks for tip(s).
