View Full Version : volumetric light effect

i am trying to create a volumetric light which comes out of a fairly broad pendant light.

i rarely use these, but was wondering how i get the spread of the light to be wider near the top? if i raise the light source above the fixture, it works but that obviously problematic.

thanks

i guess u have to position ur visible light 'inside' the cap geometry and set it to invers

or exclude the lightbulb instead of inverse volumetric.

Set the position of the light above the fitting, so the spread of the light cone is appropriate.

(If it needs to be volumetric, rather than just visible, you'll need to 'exclude' the light fitting from the light in the scene tab.)

In the lights visibility tab:
"use falloff" should be on,
"use gradient" should be on.

Then make a stepped black to white gradient (interpolation 'none') - where the black to white step is determines where the visible light starts - so adjust this so it matches the edge of your light fitting.

mike just gave me an idea, you could also just us light clipping. always forget that feature. no includes and excludes no gradients just set the near clip to th distance from the light to the tip of the bulb.

hmm. i tried the gradient with the light above and must have missed interpolation = none or something.

clipping sounds like a good plan as well. that would come in handy in many applications!

Here's a demo file (C4D v10)

i will try this out thanks.

i found "near clip" to be somewhat buggy. it doesn't fully clip the light. the gradient worked great!

Depending on the height of your shade, you may want to use a
paralell spot instead of a regular spot.
