I am on a quest for the quickest way to add motion blur to an
animation. I am using mental ray to render and I have a few
questions:

1. Is there 2d motion blur for mr?
2. Is there a way to export motion vectors from mr ?
3. Are there any ways to tweak mr’s 3d motion blur to
render faster (wishful thinking)?
4. Is there a way to separate the motion vectors from
Maya’s render and apply them to a mr render?

My current method is to render out of mr, then use the rendered
animation as a camera projection and render again using Maya’s
2d motion blur (kinda convoluted).

Thanks,
tNf

For quick motion blur, you can't beat Real Smart Motion Blur by RE: Vision Effects, Inc.

It's available for Shake and After Effects (maybe more) and it calculates motion blur on final rendered frames. I use it all the time, and in most cases, it's the perfect tool for the job. Check it out:

and make sure you have a look at the gallery:

For the price of the plug-in, and the savings of render time, you really can't beat it.

Floyd,

Thanks for the reply. I have tested Real Smart Motion
Blur, and I’ve had mixed results. It's great because it's
so simple and it motion blurs everything that moves,
and it is fast. The down side is that sometimes I don't
get the quality I want and I can't get the blur long enough.
An example of this is: the 3d chair animation in Real
Smarts Motion Blur gallery. The last couple of frames
were the chair zips off should have way more motion blur.

That being said, I will give Real Smart Motion Blur
another go. However I still would like to know if
anyone can answer my questions.

Thanks again,
tNf
