View Full Version : Quality rounded cables
DaForce 04-04-2003, 12:51 AM I have read thru quite a few posts about rounded cables, and i have noticed that alot of people say that they would not use them on their harddrives as they are more prone to data corruption.
Are there any rounded cables out there that are of a high enough quality and construction standard, which can be used on harddrives with out any risk of data corruption (aside from the usual risk you have when using ribbon cables)
The reason im asking is that i want to try to replace all my ribbon cables with rounded ones, but i dont particularily want to do it if there is even a remote chance that there will be higher chance of data corruption with rounded cables, compared to ribbon cables.
Is it also true that rounded cables have a shorter Maximum length before **possible** data errors, where as ribbons can be long before they get issues?
Thanks

Cooler Master hey, i will look into those.
The ones i can get straightaway seem pretty good here is the description.
"60cm in length with 3 connectors. ATA 66/100/133 compatible. Features a densely braided metallic mesh design with a clear coat of protective plastic. Comes complete aluminum foil shielding to minimize EMI and a grounding wire (to hook up to a motherboard mounting screw) for data integrity."
Having that grounding wire sounds like it would make a difference in terms of data integrity, does it actually make a difference in reality???

sorry mate, been out on the piss all afternoon. :)
in the early days i heard a lot of complaints about data corruption. essentially the reason IDE cables are made in ribbon format is so that there is no interference between one cable and the next. if you remember back to first year physics, ant electrical signal propogating through a wire causes a magnetic field, and vice versa. the idea is that in ribbon format the magnetic field moves around the entire ribbon and results in no interference on surraounding wires.
if a rounded cable is not properly spliced and constructed, the interference problem occurs and data is corrupted during writes.
of late i've heard less and less of these problems occur, mainly due to the fact that people are buying rounded cables and not making their own with the old pen knife on the kitchen table.
the biggest advantage of rounded cables is obviously the fact that they don't interfere with internal case airflow, which can be especially annoying if you're running a dual processor system and the temperature reaches unbareable limits inside your case.
whatever you do inside of your system, make sure you regularly back up your data whenever you can. you can never be too careful.
(apologies for spelling/grammar. i've had 6 pints of cider and i'm stuffed).

They seem pretty good, and they have gotten great reviews.
And the reason im looking rounded cables is for purposes of airflow only, at the moment, i feel that my case airflow is restricted by a wall of ribbon cables.

generally speaking if a piece of hardware has had several good reviews around the traps, then it's porbably worth purchasing.
again, as i mentioned, the quality of rounded cables has been on the increase over the last year or so, and i'd be quite confident in using them (i actually have a few in my system as i type this, most purchased from local distributors).
and i'll have a few pints for ya. :)

yeah thats what i thought. The more great reviews the better the chance of the product actually living up to those reviews.
Well i have found a distributer for those cooler master cables in Victoria, and they will cost about $25 each and freight to Canberra is like $11, but they will be worth it.
Thanks
