This is my concept... I want to have some kind of person who chopped off his own arms to hang them on the trees.
Since I have no clear idea for the trees in the background and the arrangement on the arms at them yet, I leave it open for now.
I also chose the style for working I usually only use for fashion design concepts, since it seems to suite this surreal topic.

Er... ok this seems like "Whoo so much done!" but it's not.
Actually this picture was meant as Painter practice, to learn to paint every part in this porgram. Then it felt like it could match this challenge so we'll see how it evolves.
It's just some further definition and some work on my all time favorite: The face.

I'd suggest playing with the compo and the arrangement before you go into any color and detail. change poses and use different arrangements. Don't go in blindly. Glad to see you in this contest. Lets see your amazing painting skillz put to the test. Welcome and good luck!

Uh... er... well.... I always work very chaotic... ALWAYS.... this is why it is so complicated for me to write tutorials by the way.
Because I ALWAYS work in a different way on whatever thing I paint.
You'll see, I'm just mess and random Painter fun :D

Be open to other methods though. I believe that a controlled hand can go a long way. I am learning that as I get more into being a professional. Having a plan also hinders you from making drastic changes to a painting when you are so late in it. Also having a plan will let you approach a painting with confidence. Also sketching alot is fun, zillions of ideas can run through mind. Well at least in my mind it happens like that, hehe. Look at my painting, colors are everywhere. I suck on that end hehe. Have fun Anne. :D

I thought I'd post a little screenshot of the face/ upper body here since I really like the way it came out, before I'll continue showing the way I'm working myself through background and composition. ;)

Beelow, it seems that my my last reply wasn't clear enough. I always have a vision of my future paintings in mind. However, in this case I have no customer since I decided to enter this challenge for fun, so the sketching part falls apart - I am my own customer, and I clearly know what I want even if I feel free to fool around a bit.
This is a great opportunity besides all the stressfull akademy and customer work. So, even having a concept, I feel free to have some chaos, because that means trying things out, which means learning.
And besides of that, I had the little funny thought in my mind to express a really weird thing going on. I will alter, tweek and modify until I see it fits great, which might differ from my vision, but will not keep me less satisfied in the end.
One more thing: Working for yourself should describe itself in a different process than working for a customer. Some things are not necessary to please oneself. You can try it. I bet you will see how much freedom you can gain just from taking your time to goof around every now and then.

I still have no clue what means the difference between Line Art or Model and Concept Sketch... seriously this needs some "WIP" section as milestone.
However, blah, I hate writing descriptions. This is basically a task I made on the background and composition. I have an idea for the hanging hands but I don't want to sketch them until I am completely satisfied with the figures position and size.
OK, now I'm ready for weekend ^_^
I finally must say that I really like the way the background comes out. Just the dress will need some more work. It seems so sharp and edgy now, not really working well with the background.

Ok so... there's not much time left until this challenge ends - time to throw the whole concept over and paint something totally different! :D
Well, I actually wanted the body to be some kinda snake but I had no good idea how to make it for a long time.
So whatever, we'll see if I finish this in time or if I'll completely lose interest. XD
 Please don't lose interest...
What exactly were you trying to capture with a snake...? Just the texture, or the complete demeanor of a snake in your character?
I really hope you can get it all out what is in your mind. I know how frustrating it can be sometimes, especially when you just dive in! I know a lot about letting the painting just come from within and pulling things from the chaos. You and I may be very much alike in that regard.:D
I really hope you continue Anne:bounce:
I wish you the best of productivity
Oh... I really loved the feel of your image in Post#9

This is something I use to do quite often after I have "finished working for today": I take the newest WIP I got and adjust the screenshot JPEG version quickly to get rid of some mistakes wich I didn't spot earlier during working process - or I experiment with some ideas.
The figure is bigger and better moving now, but I need to find a solution for the left side which seems quite empty now.

hey Azurelle, I`m also trying new ideas with the low res jpgs after the "real"-work^^
I liked the attitude of your character from the beginning, even I wanted to wait where the paintingprocess will lead you
the last picture looks really great, very mystical and floating
you`re right, the movement is definately better now
I think what`s important now that you find a plot you are happy with and stick to it ( don`t know if the "chopped arm off" story is still up to date)
cheers,
Mathias
Keep working your magic Anne!

Sorry guys, I am late, as always.
Could somebody please drop me a reminder? Sometimes I simply forget about challenges and so never submit the final image - d'uh, my bad XD
OK, so...
Actually the arms are still chopped off but I see no free place to have them hanged down from somewhere in the background of this painting... so we'll see ;)
Thanks for everyone who is believing into this *lol*
It's a funny thing. I looked at your work today and was concerned if you were going to finish it. I am very happy to see that you are alive and well :D Please finish!

I think this painting meanwhile pretty much represents the strange behaviour of an artist in all its ways. It has become so strange, that even I have problems to figure out what I wanted to express here.
Do I have such a distorted mind..?
PS: I am sorry for the small size. For some reason Photoshop doesn't manage to safe files under 150 KB - even not with "safe for web" setting... -__-

I am so uncreative when it comes to finding good names for the individual working steps I am into...
This is again a screenshot I took and flipped and adjusted to kill errors and experiment with ideas.
I think the whole concept is pretty clear now I am just not too sure about the background.
Input anyone?

Nice!
I hope you will be able to finish it due to the deadline extension! Looks rather advanced already!
I like the colors and sense of character!
Too bad, the filesize is so small. (are you sure, you can't save a larger format? I don't have any problems with web-based saving...)
Bleib dran und viel Erfolg! :)

Thanks, well I really have no clue why the filesize is always too big.
At least it tells me this when I try to upload something... maybe I can try with making bigger screenshots next time...?
What do you think? XD

Ah dass sieht ja klasse aus!
The lion fish looks awesome but it's in contest for attention with the lady. The lack of arms is bit shocking and works against the flow of the composition but in this early stage it's probably nothing bad, why not make arms which are slowly eaten away by the surounding fish? Anyways great start!
Hi Anne!! :D A little help with file size... If you have adobe photoshop then it is very simple. open your image in Photoshop and change the resolution to 72dpi. If you take a screen shot then it should already be at 72dpi.
1. Make sure that the longest side of the image does NOT exceed 1280pixels (requirement by CGSociety). Even if your file size is very small in KBs, if the size of the longest side of the image exceeds 1280 it will not upload.
2. Your file size must be under 150KB, so in Photoshop, go to save for web and select OPTIMIZE to SIZE. When you select optimize to size, type 150 in the box and hit ok. It will automatically take care of the settings/quality needed to produce a 150K size image. Then just save. :D
Hope this is clear Anne. Lovely work!!

Hiun, I already did all that and it didn't work...
thanks for the input with the arm eating fish. But it doesn't seem like I'll be able to finish this. I'm too buy, simply...
