View Full Version : Soldier concept WIP
JJNaas 09-12-2007, 12:23 PM Ok, here's the deal: I'm making a test concept image for a possible game project. As you can see from my portfolio, (http://ungroup.net/jjn/) I haven't done much character design previously, let alone something that's dark and militaristic. So that's a challenge for me.
All ideas and critique that can make this as military and dark and hard edged as possible are appreciated. Some nazi mysticism is required for this character as well.
Here's a very rough sketch to begin with, looks like Boba Fett. Damn.

This looks like it'll be interesting. The mask of your soldier reminded me of Magneto's Helmet on X-men at first but now I see the Boba Fett resemblance.
I'm thinking you want a hardcore, cold hearted, step on your face and forget about you type of soldier right? To me the look of a soldier like that has muted colors of two or three tones like the colors black and charcoal. I wouldn't be able to see the soldiers face either because he's wearing a gas mask or his face is heavily augmented by machinery. He'd also be wearing decoration around his body that looks like sharp objects jutting out like thorns. And I'd put a bayonet on his gun because bayonets seem savage and primal.
Anyways draw a soldier that looks like it would hurt your body if you were to hug him.

Rangerman: Thanks a lot. :) The bayonet is a neat idea. Muted colours with black sounds right.. red most likely, to emphasize the nazi theme.
Here's an update. I'll be working on this a bit by a bit.. during lunch and coffee breaks at work. ;)
The difficult bit is to make create some exciting design while maintaining a sense of practicality. The scope in the helmet may be a bad idea.. we'll see. The design of the gun is still totally undefined. A futuristic Sten machine gun is what I'd like to do..

I think you should now concetrate just one the character itself and leave the background as rough as it is right now. Character design is about the character and if you have other things interfering with this, it can become frustrating or make you neglect the important part. Take Marko Djurdjevic, he draws just his characters, no background element what so ever.
The design is good. I would make the eye piece more delicate and detatchable so that he can take it off when he does not need it.
There needs to be some kind of seperation with his shoulders to the head. You could make the design like that, but make sure it is clear that it is the suit that gives the form that look and not the shoulders themselves.
I would not even worry about lighting at this stage. You are creating a concept, not an illustration; and lighting is part of the mood in an illustration, not so in concept. So I would make everything possibly line art, that way when it does come to giving it volume, it is easier. If you prefer block-in, then do it the shades that you think that piece or that piece is going to be in terms of value, instead of terms of lighting condition.
Now that you have your rough, turn that layer down to 60% or so and draw on top of it, in line, to define the forms before giving the drawing more details.
When you do the details do it on a seperate layer to the form lines. Also possibly seperate the details from each piece through layers. You can always merge layers when you feel they are done.
Hope this helps.

Fl3wk: Thanks for the critique. Ok, I'll concentrate the character and try to get to design finished before anything else. I'm a bit uncomfortable designing using line art, so I'll do it by blocking in shapes the way you suggested. Good point about the shoulders. Updates next week.

Nice work so far, I agree with Fl3wk. I like the pose and atmosphere so far, it looks very promising :)

Dianae: Thanks for encouraging.
Alrighty then, an update.
I decided to do lineart after all. Gun design still missing... gotta work on that next.
