Hi! My name is Abbey TerMeer. I took an unexpected break from the art scene for a while, as I'm sure most of you know exactly how that goes, and Im trying to dive right back into it. really making it an effort to improve who i am and what I do when it comes to art.

This thread looks like a great place to learn, and I look forward to participating here! Hopefully, I'll be able to see progress in my work like I've seen from so many here :)

So I'll start my first thread with this, a painting I did in PS CS for about an hour. no ref.

Welcome, to see more from you cheers.
About the picture it looks nice but I think there is a too big shading difference from the face to the rest of the body.
cheers

Welcome Auria, nice job on the painting however I agree with voraz on the head. Her head almost looks like it was pasted on because of the lack of rendering. I don't know if you are going to go back and revisit this painting. If you do I'd also take another look at the placement of the head on her neck. It does not look like her head sits properly on her neck, maybe move it back a bit? Keep up the good work.

anandpg - thank you!!! :D!! im excited.

voraz and plunq - thank you for the suggestions with the shading on the face, i definately needed to dive into it a bit more, and plunq thanks for the head placement suggestions as well.

:D!!

this is a pic im working on now, for a friend... hes got this... dominatrix thing going on and i was trying to do a picture for his website.

Welcome to you Auria! The pose you have for the dominatrix especially the foreshortening of the raised leg look really good. It's a cute sketch but something about where the neck and the head meet looks a little off to me. I wish I could be more specific. Anyway looking forward to seeing more from you. Thanks for stopping by my thread.:)

samanthie - thank you sooo much!! <3 lol i seem to have a neck to head placement difficiency, im glad i know this now i appreciate it a lot! same thing was wrong in the previous picture, definately something im going to work on, and hopefully fix in this picture. thanks for the welcome! ^^

Hey Auria.

Nice start, really. See how it's good to start a thread with some boobs, guys start commenting, haha. Just kidding of course! Don't mind that. On this last piece, it seems as if you finish one area and then move on to the other. Maybe it's just me but I think it's more comfortable to work on the whole piece, so that all areas are at the same level of details. It may be just a question of preference though.

Aaand welcome to the forum :)

Hi Auria, really nice start to your thread! Nice skin shading on the dominatrix; one thing: her right upper arm seems a bit short. Keep posting!

Hi Auria!
My name is Auriea!
you have good taste in names (^_^)b

I think a longer neck would better suit the dominatrix. Maybe that is what is making the head appear awkward on the body.

Hi Abbey, nice painting of your dominatrix. I really like her long legs and I started to notice that her left foot, the foot that's propped up, should be just a little bit bigger than the foot on the ground because of perspective. Her left leg is jutting out towards the viewer while her right leg remains closer to the background, or unless she's bending her left leg, forget about what I said. Other than that I can't wait to see how your'e going to paint the stockings and the boots. Looks cool so far.

Auria
09-16-2007, 05:22 AM
razz - yes, that is definately something i need to start doing with my more outlinish type drawings. with paintings its usually the whole piece, but with those kind i work from area to area... working on the whole piece would work better as i usually get ADD by the time i reach the final areas to render XD haha thanks for the suggestion :D

batt812 - noted! i thought something looked a bit off.

auriea! - haha, thats awesome :D <3 thanks for the suggestion as well ^^

rangerman - i know the boots are going to be fun :D thanks for the tip on the foreshortening as well, something i always seem to have trouble with. note to self *depth perception exists in pictures* XD

did a quick study using Bernini's Statue of David as a reference. about 1hr.
Bernini is one of my favorite artists in regards to all mediums. One of my favorite overall. So i figured he would be a good choice. im trying to understand the human body better, and bernini in my opinion knew it quite well. :)

This is really nice Auria. You certainly have captured his expression!:) I would suggest deeper shading around the hair line.

Nice job with the painting. I'm wondering if there is more highlights in the original picture because what I see right now are only two tones of color. I think some lighter colors here and there would help create some volume to the painting.

thanks guys for the suggestions ^^ i applied them just a little bit, still didnt get much detail in with the hair. lol but i think i just got lazy, did this at 4am :D

Hi Abbey

thanks for your kind words in my own humble thread.
try to create a wider range of values when doing studies like the Bernini (need darker shadows and brighter highlights)

Great thread start!
Looking forward to see more...

Hi Abbey,

welcome to the forum and our small corner of anatomy ;) I hope you'll have a great creative time here :)

This David sculpture looks a little like plastic ^^ I think you should work more with the values and the saturation ... just get some more light on him :)

Are you only working digital or will we see traditional stuff from time to time? :D

Keep it up!

NR43 and Trunks - thanks guys for the welcome ^^ truely. i know tonal values are one of my weaknesses and i appreciate you guys pointing them out to me. ill keep trying to improve them in future works :)!! as far as traditional, definately, i tend to do most of my sketching traditionally anyway, but my painting is almost strictly digital most of the time. :D

thanks again guys

well, speaking of traditional art... though, not quite what was probably in mind. i started this yesterday. it still has a lot of work, this is about 4 hours into it, but i started a sculpture. i havent done one in about 3 years so it was a trip to go out and buy clay for it. i need tools though, i thought i had some, got home and didnt :( so i need to go out and get some before i can really finish this.

this is a painting i did on my friends pick guard about a week ago. acrylics, and finished with a varnish.

thank you so much monicaitt!

here is another Bernini study. about 2 hrs. this time as a close up on "Rape of Proserpina" i chose this picture because of the strong hands, which is another area i need to work on. I tried to emphasize not only on form but on tonal value as well, trying to improve from the David piece through everyones suggestions :)

that sculpture is going to be beautiful (already is)I agree with Ratul, the hands are great and the effect of the pressure on the skin is wonderful.
The ring finger on his left hand (at our right side) could use a bit more of that but it's just nitpicking really.

Hi...Abbey ...:)

Just went through your thread...GREAT START...
I like the way that guitar came out...nice design...:)
That last Bernini study ...GREAT..:applause:
Nice start on that female sculpture...a good way to make your own tools, is to just take a coat hanger and cut off a bunch of five or six inch pieces,..bend them into different size and shaped loops..twist the end of the loops like you do on a trash tie,...then get a hollow shaft for your handle...I use a hollow alluminum arrow shaft...cut it to the length you want, and then insert the loop into the hollow end...stick a little srew in the shaft, to keep the loop from coming out of the shaft as you pull and do your carving into the clay with the loop..they work great, and are basically free..and allow you to customize the shaped loops to fit your needs..:)
You might want to buy a couple of Burne Hogarth books...He has a way of doing figures that is based on the method of creating figures that the sculptors like Bernini used...He learned how to creat figures by studying the works of Michalanglio for years...GREAT method he teaches, and GREAT books with everything you will ever need to know about creating figures is in them..DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING IS MY FAVORITE, BUT THEY ARE ALL ..GREAT, and for sure worth the investment
Anyway ..enjoying your thread so far, and looking forward to seeing the progress that is sure to happen in it..with alot of practice. :)

Hi Abbey,
very nice work on this study! If it is possible can you post your images with 600px width? I always think it is hard to see some mistakes you could have made in this small versions. Also it is not the same to enjoy an image in a big size or to try to see something on that small size ;) Just a thought ;)

Keep it up!

vincerecaos, tiziano admirer, NR43, rdsarna - thank you guys so much for your wonderful nice comments. hopefully ill be able to keep up that well with tones :)!!

trunks - yea sure, i can start doing that. lol. i guess im just used to the internet world where bigger pictures were looked down upon b/c of loading time. haha.

spiritdreamer - i cannot thank you enough for your wonderful suggestions, ive already made a coat hanger type thing (couldnt find a hollow shaft, but i didnt cut the coat hanger all the way and pounded it with a sufficient amount of duct tape) and its working great :)! also, with the burne hogarth books as well. that couldnt be more of what i have been looking for, and im definately buying the dynamic one with my next paycheck :D! i appreciate it a lot, truely.

todays painting, the notorious bettie page!!

oh bettie, how your face at this angle sucks, and i want to punch it. however, i love you. and i cannot bare to see your face punched in. so i stuck it out, and somehow got something close to how its supposed to look.

i know her hands could be better too, the one is way too unintentionally outlined O_o;

about 2.5 - 3 hours

I like your painting of Betty, Abbey. Her right hand looks funny to me and I think one of the problems is the detailng you did on her palm. It looks like a finger sticking out in an awkward fashion. How come you don't like the angle of her face?

rangerman - thanks for the comments on the hands, i know they're kinda funky :( the angle on the face was extremely difficult to paint, esspecially her nose. its just, an odd angle. not quite straight on and tilted up. a very foriegn angle for me to paint.

dhame - thanks!! :)

This is a painting of my own i started a while ago. no refs, i couldnt tell you how many hours, a lot lol.

still a WIP, last touched aug 19.

Hi Auria, I agree with the others great Bernini study, those hands! The Bettie Page portrait looks like her to me. I like the lady in blue. I think that the highlight on her shoulder is a just a little distracting. Maybe just a little more blending there. Good work Auria!

Hi

nice start on that painting
the back of that dress is bothering me... contrast is way too high there...
it would be a good idea to think about and setup your light source(s) at this stage.
remember that the viewer's eyes are always lead towards the points of high contrast.

also,
see if you can make her appearance as a female more striking... maybe show more of the round forms of her buttox (not being a perv here but I think it could boost up the sensuality meter if done right)

also,
her left arm... what is she doing with it? I think you want to tell us a story but it is not quite clear to me what exactly yet. You could make her hold something or otherwise pose the hand in a really elegant way...

just some suggestions to get you going (I sense you may feel a bit stuck here, hope it helps)

If you want inspiration on lighting... check out the thread of Stahlberg in the tutorials forum where he does paintovers...

here's the link:
"PAINTOVER PLEASE" - painted crits on demand - with Steven Stahlberg (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=359226)

good luck! this piece has potential!!

sorry about the lack of updates, been doing some major site remodeling lately and its taking up a lot of time. also, redid the sculpture i was working on. started anew so ill get a picture of that up as well.

my next goal is to work on traditional anatomy sketches, really work on form with hands/feet/faces esspecially.

right now working on something for my friends bands site, its just a straight up painting of the basist from ref.
this is what i have so far.

Samanthie thank you for the suggestion about her shoulder! ill fix that right away :)!!

Trunks thank you :)! ill add those in asap ^^

vincerecaos, elnaz, gisaiagami thank you guys a lot ^^!

NR43 Thank you very very much for your suggestions. the original intent with the hand was merely to hold the dress but i know it needs more, and im glad you said that because now its spinning with ideas. the back of the dress is still under construction so i could see why the contrast would be high. i do have an overall light source but the piece has a while to go, i do like the idea of the highest contrast being the point of interest... i always knew that, but i dont think ive really applied it... definatley something to work on! ^^ thanks again.

rdsarna i so suck at values, thank you very much. im gonna straight up just butcher this thing to see how it looks with values. not permanently, but i think i need to attack it on a different layer even to get a feel of really what depth in value could look like O_o

Hi ...Abbey ...:)

Just stopping by to see what you've been up to .
What medium is that base player painted in, is it oils..just curious
Anyway, it looks GREAT..:applause:I LIKE THE LUMINIOUS LIGHTING ON HIS FORARMS...Nice color harmony throughout the whole painting
I really like the ..X..composition of that one...
Be carefull about going directly into the corners with your compositions, Be like a boxer,..stay out of the corners of the ring,..you can get into alot of trouble and be pinned in them, if you are not carefull...:scream:
But it looks like you pulled it off in this one, ..that shiney spot on the neck of the guatar saves it, and keeps me from going right out of the painting from the start of the journy into it..NICE TOUCH ..:)
Anyway, a real pleasure seeing your works, and progress..
HAVE A GREAT ONE..

To me she looks imbalanced and might fall over to the left side of the picture. I think if you drew her figure out to look like she's balancing herself out, that could help solve your problem.

I drew a quick gesture of what she probably should look like. Yet I could be wrong about how I made the gesture look balanced, but hopefully this would give you an idea.

http://imagehub.geekfury.com/files/19/Alice%20Gesture01.jpg

Also her skirt looks like it's being puffed out by a wire frame underneath it. Perhaps if the skirt looked like it was flowing around her legs a little more that could help solve that problem.

Other than that the painting already looks pretty interesting to me. Alice in Wonderland was always interesting to me, although I did have a hard time understanding the books.

thanks rangerman, posture, definately, that could be a big part of it. thanks for the drawing!
... i know that stupid skirt, i have never been able to do skirts... any suggestions?

either way, after drooling over bumskees thread i got really inspired to paint something yesterday not in my usual nature. this was only about 10 min, but i like the way it came out. i just think i like it though cuz its so different from what im used to painting.

Hi Auria, I could tell that was Alice right off!:) Her standing position looks fine to me but Tim's idea is a good one and would be a cute pose for her. For the skirt the best way to learn cloth is to sketch it so you can understand how it behaves. Different cloth will flow, crumple and drape differently. Try sketching some different clothing models. I have a book I just love that I think is very helpful with the different folds of cloth and how it drapes on the body. It's called 'Drawing People by Barbara Bradley' with emphasis on the clothed figure. It shows the various types of folds in cloth/clothing. She works with pencil. Hey I think your basist is super, love the shading and the colors you chose.
