Title: Darth Maul Cyborg
Name: Norman Schaar
Country: Spain
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay, ZBrush
I have always thought Darth Maul was the most bad-ass character from the Star Wars franchise, and it was a pity to see him go right away. He definitely deserved more screen time! I came through an illustration of this Cyborg Darth Maul (btw, it's from a non-canon book, Star Wars: Visionaries) and thought it would be cool to bring him back to life. I was aiming for a realistic look, rather than a comic style, which is how it was portrayed in the book.
I started off with a really simple basemesh in 3dsmax which I exported to ZBrush for sculpting. Once it was done, I retopologized and exported it all back to 3dsmax. All the mechanical stuff was done in 3dsmax. The character was rendered with V-Ray and the composition of the different passes was done in Photoshop. I had a lot of fun doing this and I learned a lot (specially with the ZBrush-3dsmax workflow)! It's my first character and ZBrush work ever, so I hope you guys like it!

Awsome concept, great execution. Like you I am a BIG fan of maul and in fact back in my (much) younger days when the film first came out would dress like him, sans facial tatoos. Anyway just wanna say that overall you have done a great job, there are some things that for me detract from how great it is.
His horns are too blunt. I know that the horns are meant to be bigger, but I think they could be a lot sharper, and longer to really jazz up his dangerous look. His feet/claws on his robotic bottom half should be bigger IMO. I think once again it would amp up his appeal. I think it was George Lucas (how appropriate) who said that with your ideas you should push them as far as you can, until they dont work, and then take them back just a little to balance it on the edge of awsomeness (not sure if he used that exact adjective). Finally his face and body topology should be worked on some more, his facial likeness is a bit off. I had a look at a pic of the cyborg, I know the face is a bit different but since it is meant to be darth maul...
Oh and his skin texture looks a bit too much like plastic for my liking.
Overall I really like what you youve done, a few small tweaks would really make it shine but a strong piece nonetheless. 3*

Awesome piece mate great work for an first attempt:thumbsup:, however like urban-rebellion i think the horns, likeness and skin texture could be improved (I know this sounds weird but maybe give him some nipples because it seems odd without them)
Still an excellent model to be proud of :)

i m darth maul fan too.
my early concept works start from star wars ep 1.
he is one of my favourite villain.
i think you should make his body more fit to survive the battle with jedi.
you work best at his leg. the concept was great, it remind me of general grevious. it has a grip on it.
overall it is amazing works!!

Hi Like you and the others who post, I'm a big fan of Darth Maul too.
I agree with urban-rebellion about the horns, they had to look more scared, remember the character was created to resemble the devil in all cultures, and I don't like the thing that you put in his neck, it doesn't fit with the rest of the character, what I like it very much the legs it resembles me to another great character, General Grevious, i don't know if was intentionally or by accident, but they look great.
Great modelling, concept and texturing.
Keep going. 3*

wow! Thanks everybody for the C&C and the ratings. The original concept is right here:

As you might notice, I did some changes to the overall style. ( I explained this in the first post aswell. ) In the concept, he looks skinny and the legs are predominant in the overall picture. I wanted to achive the opposite though. Some other changes involve the skin color, which is just wrong. Red and black are Darth Maul's colors in TPM. And about the horns, I agree with you all. I don't like the horns I put on him, but I disliked the horns in the first place anyway. I tried to take those from the concept and "soften" them. I still dont like them, but I think they look better than in the concept.
Another thing I didn't like from the concept was his aggressive expression. As a kid, Darth Maul would give me the impression of a very serene character, allthough he would unleash his anger and power when the battle began. I think I achived this by posing him as I did. It seems as if he would just stand cool and force push or choke somebody. He doesn't even ignite his lightsaber, because he knows he is superior to his opponent. (Just like he though when he was fighting Qui Gon and Obi).
I would also like to point out, that the Darth Maul from the concept doesn't look even close to the Darth Maul seen in the movie. Again, I was trying to make a hybrid of both version.

Once again. Thank you very much for all the C&C. I really appreciate it!
