INRI INFANS
This image is the result of an idea I’ve had in my head since last Christmas, and perhaps because we approach the Easter holiday it finally popped out.
Motivation:
----------
This work is an attempt to juxtapose two of the most significant symbols in the Christian religion in one image. To the best of my knowledge I’ve never seen this particular concept executed before. As far as I know this is an original design.
The images of the infant Jesus in the manger, as well as the image of the bedraggled adult Jesus on the cross have become so common that they have lost something in their commonality. I want to get people to look at the life and purpose of Jesus in a different light. Think about it again a little differently.
A secondary interpretation could also be the idea that the observer in this image is Mary or Joseph looking up at Jesus on the cross and not seeing the adult that hung there, but in a moment of vision, the child to whom they gave birth and raised as their son.
Image Elements:
----------
• Final rendered size: 2500x4000 px
• Sunset is a Photoshop manipulated sunset I took in Tahiti on my honeymoon
• Most 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering done in Zbrush except for the baby head, spikes, and cross-beam which were done in Wings 3D
• Final composition including “god rays” done in Photoshop
• The gold leaf on the borders is reminiscent of works like Russian icon art and is intended to carry some of the same symbolic values.
• Cross is a trunk of an olive tree. Historical evidence points to the fact that Romans may have used olive tree trunks for such use. Olives also have a significant historical and religious symbolism value
