Hi everyone!

I've been wanting to create a winter matte for quite some time. It's really one of my first mattes and I'm not very strong at creating a concept. Here is a rough concept drawing I've done in photoshop for placement/composition. I haven't started to tackle mood or lighting yet, I'd like to get the composition down first. Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreachiated!

Thanks!
Bonnie :)

hey, welcome to this forums, well I see you have indeed a really rough sketch, but I would think about the concept before doing a matte painting, you see what you have would be just a simple matte painting background, I would do first the concept , think about the idea of somethuing interesting on th eimage , a focal point, maybe a snow secret base, or some cool ice formations, somethng that is not common, you know, something that sells the viewer an original idea, after you get it, sytart thinking in your composition, I suggest that you visit the tutorials section here in this forums, you will learn a lot about landscape composition rules

Thanks Jamesvfx, I'll take a look through the tutorial section.

I know it's a really rough concept sketch, but I don't want to spend hours making the concept too perfect looking incse the concept is no good and then I scrap it. I'd rather spend the time on the actual matte.

I'm going to keep moving forward with this landscape matte, I'm ok with it not being "original" looking, it's just an image I have in my head.

I have an idea to try adding a small campsite on the left with a person walking off into the distance towards the mountains, and int he foreground I'll add a dog sled coming into frame on the right towards the camp, as it if it's trying to catch up to the person, that should take my landscape and bring it more into a story mode.

Thoughts?

If you know you will use that concept then dont be afraid to spend too much time painting it, coz the more work you do with the painting, the more work you will save yourself when you come to do the final matte.
Look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks Nick!

I'm feeling a little in over my head, so I'm going to do some more tutorials as James suggested and try again in a while.

I'm sorry for posting such a pathetic concept drawing.

There's no such thing as a pathetic concept drawing. There are only different levels of ability, and i have seen much worse concepts that that :)
