View Full Version : Problem with stretching
floyd1510 09-11-2007, 08:07 AM Hi guys. I have just shifted jobs and have to rig in XSI now. I have to create a stretchy limb and spine rig. I have come from 3DS Max and was tryng to stretch the leg by calculating the distance between the hip and the ankle and adding a condition to it to increase the local X value of the thigh bone. But somehow, XSI does not let me change the value of the local X in a bone, even if I try to add an expression to it. Need some help. i would really appretiate it.
I know there is a length parameter in a bone, but I have to stretch it by translation. Also if someone could refer me to a good stretchy rig tutorial in XSI, it would be great.
Regards,
Vikram.

Hi Vikram,
Have you had a look at the soft effector addon available from the xsiblog?

There's a download link on that page. Once installed you get a command added to your Skeleton menu. Not only does it create a strechy chain, but it gives you 'soft' IK as well.
Check it out.

Place the expression on the length parameter - the way you describe the expression seems to be fine.
there used to be a great tutorial on spine and leg/foot setup from Stephane Marino, but the site seems to have changd into a blog.. can't find the tuts.
Christoph Schinko has posted a useful pdf on stretchy arms, should help: http://www.sharecg.com/v/5398/pdf/word-doc-tutorial/Arm-Rigging-for-Animators---Softimage-XSI
