View Full Version : Luxology Releases modo 301
drdespair 09-10-2007, 10:44 PM Introducing modo 301: model, paint, sculpt, animate and render. (http://www.luxology.com/whatismodo/)
AVAILABLE ON OSX AND WINDOWS! DOWNLOAD NOW!
Model
modo's modeler is the fastest, most advanced polygonal and subdivision surface 3D modeler available. It is used worldwide for everything from mechanical and architectural designs, to organic creature modeling. New snapping, UV and 3D sculpting tools make the heart of modo even stronger.
Paint
modo's paint tools provide one of the most natural painting experiences in 3D. Multi-threaded performance, a refined user interface, world class tools and the ability to directly paint on any image in the Shader Tree make painting in modo a breeze.
Sculpt
Sculpting is built right into modo. This means you can use sculpting tools right alongside traditional modeling tools - all in a true 3D environment. This changes modeling forever.
Animate (native tools allow only Keyframe and Morph target, but you can import animation via MDD from outside)
You can vary the properties of any item in modo so that it moves or changes its appearance over time. Create two different views through your camera and you've got a walkthrough animation. You can also import animations from other 3D software.
Render
modo is equipped with a world class renderer that creates gorgeous still images and rock steady animations—with physically-based lighting for natural realism. It's fast and fully multi-threaded. Render across a network of Macs and PCs for even more processing power!
Overwhelming joY! :bounce:

http://www.luxology.com/whatismodo/ - Modo 301 features
Animate YES Animate - http://www.luxology.com/whatismodo/animate.aspx
Keep in mind its keyframe animation - no bones or rigging ( Char Anim ) - YET, soon to come Id say, next big release. BUT their is .MDD support now to Character Animate in another app and bring it back into MODO for Texture/Final Render.

mdd's work quite well (I use point oven with Maya) - you can also animate morphs, all the material channels, lights, etc. They keyframe animation is basic - 301 is 'time enabled' as Luxology would say.

I'm pretty impressed with the sculpting. Luxology definitely improved the overall "feel" of their painting tools. The sculpting is much more advanced than I thought it would be. For my first hour of playing, it feels pretty darn solid. $295 well spent I think.

well for bones anim I advise the free blender then.
Congratulations team Luxology,
on a truly impressive upgrade for Modo. :applause:
I totally agree that the painting and sculpting tools are better than I thought.
Also did anyone mention it is available on Windows and Mac Os to download now.

A user tested doing character animation with Blender and then exporting as MDD and it works quite well as mentioned in Brads 'modcast'.

I want to see some Blender fluids in action, rendered in 301!!!

does Modo 301 finally have a proper toolset of modeling tools like
- Multisliding of points/edges with relativ mode ?
- Loop cut with preview/highlighting where i cut ?

Unfortunately fluids change their vertex count during an animation (ie drops form and escape etc) so MDD doesn't work for a fluid. You can export as a series of obj (which is how most programs get fluid from Blender to their software of choice). The downside is that while the fluid generates a vector map for motion blur which is used in Blender it isn't something that can be used by other software (AFAIK).
Anywho the new modo videos show off a really nice usage of their sculpt tool - adjusting a morph target with the sculpt tool as the animation loops.

I successfully exported fluids into modo 301 a few weeks ago via this process:-
Blender -> OBJ sequence ->3DSMax -> .FBX -> modo 301
Motion blur was still a problem, but even max had problems with it.
mmh....my experiences with modo are real bad. UI is great, 3d paint, render....all has amazing features, but it crashes so much and also has many graphic card compatibility problems, that my company stopped using it. Yes, after weeks of mails back and forth with Luxology.
Pity, but I'll give 301 a try anyways. Worth it! :D

As someone who traditionally uses Cinema4D, but has tried the demo (203) and loved it .... I think this is a great time to jump in and add 301 to my toolset.
This release looks AWESOME! Luxology -- way to go!

I like the fact that they move forward while still significantly improving the existing app, whether it be the existing toolset, the UI, the render speed & quality, etc.
It's a cliché, but I guess it's because Luxology really stays in very close contact with it's userbase (which is rare nowadays) that the updates seldom dissapoint.
Great update.

Good job Lux! for those that have tried it, how does the sculpting compare with mudbox, zbrush, silo, and the like? i read that you can't go up and down in sub-d resolution, isn't that important?

Those developers must be eternally caffeinated. My God, the pace at which they crank out features.
I can't keep track of all the different tools that are avaiable. It makes it very difficult on what to try to learn and what to buy!

Hi Etobler,
I upgraded to Modo v301 and asked this exact thing. Go here:

Mode has 2 kinds of sculpting, mesh sculpting is limited to the points you have, so no different sub-d levels there. However, with image sculpting you don't need anything but your base mesh and can change the rez of the limit surface to taste.

i heard they dropped the .ma importer in 301 and 'replaced ' it with fbx
can someone confirm this?
sounds odd to drop an importer filter...why not just 'add' fbx importer?

That's not completely accurate. Apparently AutoDesk phased out the .ma material out of the sdk and made the Maya Ascii format structure significantly different, thus shutting developers out in the cold. FBX should be a good replacement though as long as Max isn't in the pipeline. I've heard Max has poor support for fbx.
