View Full Version : stray points - a common question I'm sure
pseudopod 09-10-2007, 07:54 PM Greetings,
I am a new maya user (XSI verteren) and I am learning enveloping. How do a deal with stray points? There are points that just won't seem to envelope to the character. In XSI I know how to deal with this but there is something I'm not getting.
Please help.

The very first thing I would check would be the Bind Method and Dropoff Rate you used when initially binding (Skin->Bind Skin->Smooth Bind->Option box). If your verts are too far away from a joint when binding they may not necissarily get a weight.
Next I would go in and paint (Skin->Edit Smooth Skin->Paint Skin Weights Tool->Option box) that stray vert's weight 100% to a specific joint and make sure it really is bound. Then smooth from there.
Should that fail, I have written a script that copies joint weights from one vertex to another.
http://www.arcsecond.net/scripts/general/jpCopyPointWeights.mel
1)source the script
2)type jpCopyPointWeights
3)select a "good" vert - one whose weighting you like
4)click "store"
5)select the "bad" stray vert
6)click "paste"
After that I'd have to see the file to diagnose the problem.
Hope this helps.
