Hi all,

I've recently finished my 5 min short film "Tidy Monster". The film is around 5 months work. I was lucky enough to work with a great voice actor, as well as a very talented sound designer and playwright during the project.

"Tidy Monster" won the 2007 Grand Prix award at the University of Hertfordshire's 'Film Day' event.

Fantastic to see this here Tim, it's certainly one of the most imaginative pieces of CG that's been produced in years and I hope other people viewing it will appreciate its atmosphere. Great stuff!:)

Stunning work Tim. Well done for continuing to work so hard on it until it was the version you were happy with. And very well done for your achievement on Film Day too.

Artistically Innovative and exciting! A well scripted and polished short film. The construct of the piece brings the viewer through a journey of tension and inquisition into the subjects psyche. A well directed piece of work - from the managing of a creative team to the final execution.

Very very nice! I like the style and the synchronisation between the voice and the visuals. His laughing etc...
I feel the beginning is stronger though than what comes next.
It is a good idea!

Was Kafka an influence by any chance? The atmosphere reminds me a bit of the work from polish animator Piotr Dumala

Fantastic Tim, I had been wondering why I hadn't seen this uploaded anywhere already :) I liked to try and keep up with what people were doing in their films last year, but I'm glad that I didn't find out much about yours before film day, as watching it for the first time blew me away, what with everything about it feeling so polished and complete. Hope things have been going well for you since then!

So simple, and yet so unique (and i love unique!)

Why won't you use www.mediafire.com (http://www.mediafire.com) or such? It's a bummer to see a good movie in youTube. Also stage6.divx.com (http://stage6.divx.com) could do the work

Couple of weeks ago i did see it on your school site. Want to share it with others but it went down. Nice to see it here again :D.

The voice over is really strong. And the animation is really well done. Nice to see how just an voice and a room function as a character.

Congratulations with your achievements man, awesome !!

O....M....G I could not take my eyes away from it. This is amazingly fantastic.
Certainly one of the best CG i have seen here on this site.

Tell me, where did you come up with the idea or inspiriation for this peice?
How much time went into this?
And what was the main software used in your production?

Oh this film is here at last, I watched it more than three months ago at www.h3da.co.uk (http://www.h3da.co.uk/), isn't it the same copy (I cannot download it from here)?

Tim, this is the most artistic CG animation that's been seen from a while; you won't get bored of it easily.
I like this psychological monologue; you achieved the greatest effecting using the simplest technique.

Maybe the same script could be used to produce different film using different directing, but this is the best. The script, the visual effects and the room were harmonized in impressive way.

IMO It should be awarded by the Best Short Film (Animated) Oscar.

Very good....but I would love some kind of explanation (or hint) from the artist as to what it's about??? This is one of those times when I view abstract art and think..."what the F???" but then I tell myself that I bet if the artist told me what it was I would instantly "see" it as they do and think, "Wow"!

I'm sure I am the dumb-ass here as this is very well done!

Any hints digitalshaman?

pd
09-11-2007, 11:38 PM
Looks a lot like it's describing a psychic instable character. The instability could be caused by some hallucinogen. But whatever it really is - I love it!

thankyou for all the lovely comments :)

..and thanks Mathias for the mirror!

To answer the questions, I created the film in 3ds max and AE.
The screenplay was writted over christmas 2006, and was constantly changed and pulled apart write up until half way through production. Production lasted between March and July 2007.

People have so many brilliant theories behind whats happening in the film, which are all correct. I find it best to hold back what i believe to be happeneing as not to influence anyone's thoughts. Sorry! hehe

Inspiration came from many places.. the original idea came to me whilst reading, the power words can have upon the mind's eye. But generally i just get told what to do by the guy in my head who seems to have worked it all out :D

Wow, Tim. Very amazing work. Excellent combination all togather strong vocal and sound and smooth transition between all aspects and "visions" and a superbed ending to top everything off with its touch of suspance and questions.
Although I did manage to spot a little thing that buged me in the middle of the video at around the 1m and 14s mark, into the video where it seems as tho the voice is seing the room under the water. If you look on the right wall where the wall cracks and breaks in the next 'Vision(s)' you can actually see a flickering line appear and dissapear in the half cracked wall. Damn them V's for not doing what we want them to do at time. :banghead:
Besides that it is a flawless work with an amazing comp and creativity...something rare these days.:thumbsup:
