Title: Ring wallpaper
Name: Cédric Syllebranque
Country: France
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay, ZBrush

This is a widescreen wallpaper version of a past WIP. In added caustics, hook to the chain and changed the lighting.
I wanted to make it smooth an space free for icons :)
I hope you like it.

Thanks guys!

Neox3d=> Here's a small overview in max (as I don't know which part you want, i do it for modelling and positionning)

MODELING

1) I start by a very simple shape tuned with edit poly ("tileable" shape ;)):
http://www.bilbox.net/tutos/chaine/step1.jpg

2) Then, to add some complexity, I duplicate it and stretch the central part (still edit poly):
http://www.bilbox.net/tutos/chaine/step2.jpg

3) Tool->Array (tweak here for A nice overlapping) and polye edit=>add list=><select all new objects>:

4) Always editing poly, I made attach with some basic geometry (torus) and extruded some faces while tweaking a chain link with "bridge" to weld it to the chain:

POSITIONING

5)Here is the fun (easy) part: first, create a spline path and edit it to give the final shape:
http://www.bilbox.net/tutos/chaine/step5.jpg

6) Select the straight chain form step 4 then "world space modifiers=>path deform (WSM)" (note: important here: use the space modifier, not the object space modifier). Pick path=> select your spline then "move to path"

7) Here don't be afraid with the messy look of the result. First, select the axis ("x" for me as I arrayed the chain along this axis) and Stretch it all using Edit=>scale until you got the right scale. Then, tweak with the "path deform=>stretch" to get the right chain lenght and "path deform=>percent" to get the right position along the spline:

Here it is! Hope it was helpful...

Note: Some adjustments would have make it more realistic, for exemple using reactor for physical simulation but after the whole process, the links should be detached prior to reactor rigid body...

What did you use Zbrush for then? :S

What did you use Zbrush for then? :S

I used it to shape and sculpt the first version of the ring. As I was novice, I prefered add smaller details with photoshop... the tiny making of focused on the chain itself, not the ring...

old scrrenshots under zbrush:
