View Full Version : Lightwave 8
ChewyPixels 04-03-2003, 05:33 PM Anyone else seen the latest issue of Computer Arts? According to their "Coming Soon" section, Lightwave 3D 8 should be in beta form by June! This is news to me. They also have Lightwave 3D 7.6 listed under April. I wonder if this is actually a reference to Newtek's latest release (7.5b), which, as everyone knows, is already out.

just curious but how long is a program light lw liable to stay beta?
i mean say it was to be beta in june does that mean it would be out june 2004 or what?

well with a 3d program it would stay beta as long as it took to make it bugless, so if the code it tight before the beta starts then not long, if the beta testers run into problems it could take a while.

Well we know one thing there is a 7.5c build. One of Larry's 'SplineGod' tuts was done with 7.5c. As for 8.0 beta, well the new software product we partially released this past Monday and the final part released this coming Monday has been in Beta since Dec. Sometimes it takes awhile to get things all pretty. But I'd prefer that then having to go through the unfortuneate problems with 7.5b.

Was it a video tutorial or a screenshot like this?
Yeah, lets see some REAL screenshots of LW 8. Everyone knows what's going to be new in Maya 5, so why not LW 8! ;)
As long as everyone knows the image I posted was fake. :)

I agree cim, I don't understand what the positives are for keeping everything secret... it's cool to be secretive and all that but I can't see the commercial sense in it. If people knew when the next upgrade was coming they could budget for it and plan when they buy plug-ins etc.
can anyone tell me what some positives are for keeping details of the next version secret??
Software development is kept secret, because competing companies can't as easily steal "ground breaking features" or any other that would be going into up-coming versions.
Newtek doesn't really have to worry about this, though. Maya and XSI are pretty far ahead of LW on features (except modeling). If Newtek were to reveal tid-bits about LW 8, it's not going to kill them.
I'm sure Newtek will keep it's policy of, "You'll see it when we release it". Oh well.

I do hope they go with the vX interface tho', detachable panels for dual display mode would be nice also... I'm sure with the release of 8 there will be no disappointment...

My votes for chocolate! S.G.'s 7.5c was legit. It was used in his Irrational Orthopedics - bones tutorial.
As for the LW8 ss. Hey I like it. I could live with that as long as it had full customization. Can't wait to see what it really looks like now.

cg_Matt,
Always meant to tell you that your excercise on re-creating that Lightwave 8 interface was very good. You had a firm grasp of workflow improvements that showed in your design.
May be NewTek was watching.

iBlue,
That would be good, however, I'm concerned that if Lightwave 8 doesn't improve its functionality, the strawberry ice cream will end up tasting too CGI.
:p
this is not the first time that I see a lightwave related thread turn into talk about fruits, chocolates and vanilla flavours...
is that supposed to be a fun thing to do?
are you people a bunch of sugar starved females?

Either that, or a bunch of quite masculine men who are very comfortable with our Lightwave side.

whatever LW8's interface looks like lets hope it remains simple, without fancy 3d beveled buttons and colourful icons:rolleyes:
whenever a programme "upgrads" to these in their interface, I psychologically tend to think it's bloatware. Esp when it crashes.
so far Newtek hasn't dissapoint.

I hear ya, Stressbunny. When we talk about interface, at least in my humble opinion, I'm referring to workflow improvements-- getting from point A to point B. And perfecting that, will exponentially improve quality (the less time you spend wrestling with an interface, the more time you spend creating magic).
For instance, and correct me if I'm wrong, there was a time when Lightwave (4.0/5.0?) didn't have a hotkey that deselected poly/points. Lightwave 7.0+, by default, does.
Stuff like that.

um...the deselect key is '/' for points and polys.
enjoy.
