Abhinav3d 04-03-2003, 04:05 PM Hello All,
This car was modeled in XSI 2.03 in Polys...
Rendered with Final Gathering...
Any comments/crits welcome..

hey, looks pretty good so far.
i have a few things for you which will help alot.
first, add a transition of some form between the lights and the actual car.
second, when you look at the bottom picture, note that you can see the ground through the wheel, the biggest problem here is the rims are not attched to the tires, and there are not axels or brakes. (i bet you can get away with that if you turn the wheel the other way, so you can see through it
builiding an interior and making the windows transparent and reflective will help alot. the windows look cel shaded at the moment.
you also look like you are floating a little.
i know thats a lot of crits, but it is definalty a good place to work from , the car body itself looks really good.
good luck with it, have fun

it's a good start, but will need a lot of work before anyone will call it photorealistic.
Here's a few things that could use your attention:
-shadow underneath the car could be darker.
-needs a water drain between the bottom of the windshield and the top of the hood (also where the windshield wipers should stem from, rather than straight from the hood)
-headlights are too big.
-needs logos! :p
-and most importantly, as mentioned earlier, it would really benefit from an interior.
Keep it up, good luck.

Okay...lets tear this thing apart!.
Waisay kafi achha model hai, laikin agar tujhe sahi critics chahiyay hai to..phir le!
- you got the overall shape right - the propotions are good too,
- get the corners of the car smoother, and the edges rounder : like around the wheels and the corners like the back, the edges on the bumper etc..they need to be more solid.
- definetly needs a seperation, boundary between the car body and the headlights/tailights - right now they look as one surface only the texture separating them.
- and some more work on the shader, i think u have used a plain phong there, a goodg environment for reflection could make it better...
- finally remove that background, the car would look way better without that!
Sahi hai yaar, bue aisay hi kaam karta reh! you`ll definetly keep getting better - mein aleady improvement dekh raha hoon.
maaf karan, agar zaida hi critic mara mainay! :P
keep it up yaar!

The only thing that bothers me that hasnt been mentioned is that the shadow isn't pronounced enough- maybe you didnt make the "main" light strong enough?

Gatling: it's been mentioned ;)
I took another look at it, and I thought I'd reiterate what aazimkhan said about the background... it's really bringing down the quality of the car. Not only because the car is of higher detail than the background, but also because the background is what the car is reflecting... realistic reflections are essential for a good car rendering. But reflections can only be as good as the environment they're reflecting. Keep at it! :wip:

It would help your shader if you incorporated the fresnel effect into your reflections. The reflections should be brighter as the angle of the surface gets shallower in relationship to the camera. Hope that makes sense, I haven't used XSI, so I'm not sure how the shaders work.

Hey,
Chaos Maximus,Duffman,Gatling,Gilgamesh,aazimkhan
I would like to thank you guys for commenting on my work...
Looks like I need to model an interior after all :)
Chaos Maximus:
I will turn the wheel the opposite side for the second render.I like that idea...
Z, Duffman:
As for the bG...
I kind of pictured this car in an old European town street kind of setting..
Lemme try changing the bg and add the env ref map..
As for darkening the shadow, I agree it should be darkened..But I am using final gathering over here...So i need to figure out if I can actully darken the shadows...
So...It's back to the drawing boards....
Aazim khan:
Oye Arbi Ghode....
Kya Re...
Tu bahut bola....Bhai pe comment kiya...
Lagta hai tera game bajana padega..
Du kya kharcha pani....
Lekin to jo bola...sahi bola ...Is liye tere to bhai ne chod sorry ghod diya
Thanks again Guys...

its good, but i wouldn't call it photo-realistic ;)

xsi eh
you should plug an incidence i think it is into the reflectivity
and color correction between those for adjustment
i donno if your using lights but you can still have lights with final gathering. put in a spot light with shadows.
if it gets too bright turn down the radiance on some materials.

Ok guys....
I have made some changes to it....
But I think that the car shader still needs some work...
Any one ....Any ideas......

that lighting can be improved, better defined shadows will help so that it won't look flat
it looks good so far dude

I think you should add a bit more of a gap around the headlights, before it gets to the panels, and maybe lower the reflectivity a bit. :)

quite a good start, but the lighting needs more work... i'm guessing you used gi but "forgot" to place a main light which throws shadows.... at the moment it loosk a bit like a floating car...
other than that, good start... :)

it has probably already been mentioned  (its getting late:D) but the surface of the car looks cel shaded at the moment, it has no depth and there seems to be no specular? are you using a HDRI map for the lighting? maybe just make the light source in that......maybe......neways good work keep it up!

Hi Guys,
I kinda stopped working for some time on the car so was not able to post any changes....
I have added one more update...
This time it is more complete with shadows and better windows..
Hope you like it...

If you can't view it....
Download it from
http://www.vfs.com/~abhinavc/last.jpg
one way to improve the paint look...
use a fresnel shader for the paint surface reflection (an incidence angle gradient) so that surface is maybe 20% reflective at a 90 degree angle and 90% reflective at a 0 degree angle... kind of like how the ocean looks clear if you look straight down at it but is the same color as the sky (almost) at the horizon...this will give the car's reflections a lot more depth and wont look so flat...hope that helps :)
