egption 04-03-2003, 05:51 AM Hello, everyone! I really need your help:
does anyone know how to simulate a tearing cloth animation? Like tearing a hole in the piece of cloth or make an opening by ripping....... i'm using MayaCloth and Syflex, who cud help me,please......

if the tear happens fast you could use two+ cloth objects and key their visablity
run your sim tell the time of the tear then copy your cloth object
take the copy and model the tear(if it tears in half break it apart into 2 )
now make those cloth objects and set their intial state(not sure if this is nessasary)
then key the visability of the 1st off and the new ones on and it will look as if it tears in half
if you want more of a zipper effect you could then use cloth constraints to keep the 2 halfs together and animate the weight off in a progression
the cloth constraint can be applyed on vertex bases so you would go down the tear and constrain matching verts on the 2 halfs

Wow, thank you for your kindly suggestions!! i really appreaciate that!
Yes i'd already tried the zipper effect of MayaCloth, i think it's nice and i was satisfied with it.
However, this time i want to make some tattered look, having an irregular ragged edge, uneven or jagged in outline. I guess this is the most difficult. do u think the only way is to model it??
And what about syflex? any function on this point?

I'm no expert, but if you're looking to make jagged edges appear after the rip, I wonder if you couldn't do something with displacement mapping and somehow key that into the animation. . .I'm not sure if this is possible, but it's an idea I had.
Let me know what technique you end up using, at any rate. :)

callon, thanks for your idea! Once i thought about the displacement mapping however i'm not good at mapping, so i didnot try it.....anyway,i wud like to tell u my results finally . but maybe in a long period, i don't know
