Hi Guys and Girls,

been working on a small rov, loosly based on the existing Hyball ROV which you can see here:

my start on the model:

attachment point of the upper thrusters

wireframe of the model including the surrounding "cage"
http://www.military-meshes.com/braxton/hyball7-c.jpg

and a complete shot of the model so far

all modelled in Rhino and rendered in Flamingo

I like the clean look of it so far... i think it really needs some huge turbine-type-propeller-engines on either side. that would be a good place to crank up the detail... of course, that might be a bit too far of model...

nono the details like the propellers and all will come. as will the whole camera attachment in the middle :)

i started to work on the upper thruster assembly :) the propeller is not in there yet but the basic geometry is there and according to my ref images should be pretty much like the real thing.

i turned on wireframes for this render to give ya an impression of how the thing looks "beneath" :)

Very nice! That is a very clean model.

How did you do the base of the thruster where it meets the sphere? Very clean!

It's very obvious this was not done in MAX, which is what I use!

small question, who does use flamingo here as well? and could that one help me out a bit with the scene setup? i think i got the stuff with the reflections a bit wrong...

believe it or not! i continued working on my little fellow here

- removed some parts of the cage - will be redone to fit better
- started on the camera assembly in the middle (finally) :)

the little cage stuff inside will feature the camera tracking lights later which will be "hung" onto this, one above and one below the camera.

Hey Brax really nice :) I really like the model so far.

just wondering how aquadynamic (does that exist ?) it is with those side propellers. But then again speed might not be an issue, but efficiency on energy would definatly be imho.
All this just to say that some frontal deflector on the props would probably help with water flow and might also look good :)

keep it up !

i love rhino work, great job

thx guys!

@meka - the thing is only 50cm wide in real life as you can see here, so i think it should do without frontal deflectors on the props... as i understand, it is steered by regulating the speed every prop rotates with :)

i finally had time to get to a final stage concerning the shape of the cage surrounding the ROV itself... here are two images

This is excellent, I love the realistic renders you have submitted.
Have you obtained this effect with the textures or with the lighting or both ?

Keep at it :)

Braxton

i would say both, but this is only a WIP setup.. so i just have general colored materials on the surfaces and 2 spotlights activated... "real" texturing will start later when i have finished modelling :)
