At first I wanted to show a living creature of some sort, but after starting the illustration I thought I would show the absence of a real live person, and imply the presence of someone waiting to get on the bus. What sort of objects would they have with them and what purpose would those objects serve? I started with the bench and starting adding different things as I came up with them.

Here I added the umbrella. This was one of the first objects that I thought of, I thought the colors would really contrast the green bench. Besides that, it allows me to show that someone would have to be holding the umbrella, expressing this was important.

Here I moved the umbrella, added a newspaper, changed the sidewalk and some more lighting and shading.

Here I modified the newspaper and added a few touches to the sidewalk and sewer cover. Here I am basically trying to come up create what I am visualizing. I know the main elements I want to involve, so I try to get those at least started as soon as I can. Then go from there.

More shading and lighting.
I was just trying to think of ways to show more movement or life with the lack of actual life. The illusion of motion in the coffee steam as an example.

OK, this is The Stop. I had a lot of fun with this one. I was able to explore something new. Most of my paintings have some sort of living thing as the focal point. Alot of human portraits, because faces (for me) are some of the most challenging things to try and re-produce.

With this painting I had to do something different. I had to show the illusion motion without an actual living object moving them. I started with the bench and went from there. As soon as I started reading the challenge details a green bench was the first object that popped into my imagination. I then took it to another level, by adding different things that I thought would work well to express the absence of life that I was going for. The umbrella was the very first object. I loved the colors and the fact that an umbrella usually isn't floating in the air without someone holding it. Then I started thinking of different objects someone might have with them while they were waiting for the bus on their way to work. For example; reading a newspaper or drinking a cup of coffee from the Wake & Bakery. This bakery was one of the first concept logos I did when I became a graphic designer. It was fun to include certain easter eggs from my past. If you read the newspaper you will see alot of this.

So, here it is. I really enjoyed the challenge, and am thankful for the opportunity. I wish I had a reason to paint everyday, like this.

Thanks,
Crosseyed Chameleon
