Light is a form of (more or less harmless) radiation in a narrow spectrum the photosensitive parts of our eyes responds to?

without it we would not be able to see "alot"

Well, it's one of the two major components to photorealistic rendering. Materials being the other. Even a great model looks fake if like poorly.

If you think about it, all we really see are different levels and colors of light, so lighting is everying. Rendering is just simulating interactions between your scene and the light, so in order to totally control the product, you have to learn to control the light.

Without good lighting your materials would look bad no matter how good they are, and without proper lighting you would not have the proper contrast to your image which makes it look flat and unrealistic even if the image isn't realistic your eye still needs to "believe" it. All this can't be done without the right lighting. Also the lighting controls the color that you perceive, which affects the mood you may want the viewer to feel.
Its just as important as any other element in CG.

Wow, I never thought I'd see such a question posted in a CG forum. Lighting is everything. Like already stated in numerous ways, without it your scene would be black. When I rendered an old scene using newer GI lighting, I was absolutely amazed how much of a difference it made. Any book you read or artist you talk to will say lighting is everything. If your getting frustrated cause you can't seem to get the lighting right, it's ok. Lighting is also one of the hardest aspects of rendering to get right. Just keep moving lights around, adjusting settings and most importantly read as much as you can on lighting. Photography books are a great resource in that department.

See Jeremy Birn's (http://www.3drender.com) site. Buy his [digital] Lighting & Rendering book. Then you'll understand why lighting is so important.

One other thing I'd like to add...
When I see this type of question, it seems that the person asking does not understand that in Max, when you create an object, of any kind, it's being lit by hidden lights in the scene. When you create your first light, the default lights go away.
Remember that light defines form. It's possibly the most important criteria of a good piece of art. Any type of art.

Like everyone else has said: LIGHTING IS EVERYTHING.
It's probably one of the most important - and most overlooked - part of the cg process.
Study it well...
It can make the difference between just another cg pic, or one that amazes the cg world.

Besides, 3DZealot is correct. No one called it dumb. A bit vague maybe but not dumb. You're response tempelgarden kinda sticks out as dumb. But then again, you're a noob, too!;)

Pardon the content.
One with and one with out:

Even with the crappy models and textures, I'm sure you can see how the lighting dramatically changes the mood.

Good post, Stroker.
I like the one without because it does hide the "crappy content" better.;)
