Even a poor little toy can have gender issues. But now with the miracle of modern surgery you can have what you want, when you want it! As for the feet, well, they are just great for swimming, whether in the Black Lagoon or your very own Malibu pool.

He may look unusual, but I'm sure there's an internet forum somewhere for people just like him. And the important thing is, he looks happy. Hey soapy, you haven't disappointed us mate. That kind of strangeness is kicking off your entry to a great start. Really nice render too

Musi- I have some ideas but for now I am just going to experiment and see where it wants to go rather than letting the cat out of the bag prematurely.

D-Mac- Hey thanks, yeah I am glad I finally made it over here. This contest looks to be lots of fun.

Mdavid- Everytime I look at this thing it freaks me out. Talk about an ugly little sucker.

Well I will say this much, the trollop up there who I havent got a name for yet is the first secretary to the high priest of the Choads. More later.

Ferx - yeah I will probably start talking about the full scene a little later on. I have this bad habit of working towards a scene then building the models and making something completely different out of them. But I do have some ideas I am just not sure if they will work or I have time. More later though.

Semsahmer - Glad you like him. He is pretty much done at the moment. I like rubber boots though so maybe I will build some for another character.

Mike - Thanks man yep wackiness is a word, I looked it up, but you spelled it wrong. ;-)

Ordibble P. Lop - it is not so much that they are erect, they are just really red. It is like the dude rouged them or else he just had a really nasty titty twister fight. In any case I noticed after I had posted and have since desaturated them and adjusted the colour too. Plus I did some other fixes on that tex map.

Daddymack - don't worry dawg, some major yummy goodness is in the pipe.

soapy
09-13-2007, 08:50 PM
Ferx- thanks. I have a couple of idea but keep changing my mind. Right now I am just going to concentrate on building some fun characters and see where it leads. More on this below.

Octopus- Thanks, yeah they are supposed to be toys. I always make toys act out the themes I do. Sometimes I forget I am building toys and the character gets a little too real. Usually I try to add some evidence suggestive of toys.

Gunilla- Yes they sort of are a couple! It started out with the guy getting the hiking boots, then I decided they would be all earthy granola crunchin' types. But she is a little more chic than he is. And of course they are both completely nuts.

Mark- Thanks man.

Thanks again Mark and Gunilla for letting me know of the rule changes. I am not sure I would of entered if it had not been for that. Just being able to rework some old models that never made it into a scene is working for me right now. It is cool to be freed up from the drudgery of starting completely from scratch on a model and spend more time on the texture mapping.

My first idea for this image was to do a huge sprawling religious war scene. Which might still happen. The latest idea is a more sedate sort of garden scene with masked characters dancing around making merry. Like a scene from a Fellini movie or something. Perhaps a masquerade wake or an inpromptu theatre production or a wedding.

So also up in the air is the execution style of the figures. Firstly I thought I would use all kinds of toys of different types all jumbled together. But lately I have been thinking it might be nice to have all the characters be full body figures with toy head masks like the last two posted.

Thoughts, ideas, anyone?

handlebar
09-13-2007, 10:46 PM
Maybe a trip to the anual burning man festival for your characters soaps, they'll fit right in. I realy like your religious war idea, sounds epic.

Gunilla
09-14-2007, 08:15 AM
How about combining the ideas? It could be some strange religious ritual involving dancing in a park... and I like the thought of it being humantypes with toy heads, gives all kinds of vibes for some kinky cult. Disturbing.

soapy
09-14-2007, 09:27 PM
H- They just came from Burning Man. :-) I will keep plugging away and see if I can generate enough figures for a proper war.

Gunilla- I like the humans with masks idea too. So I will keep going in that direction. It occurred to me I might do one group in cute animal masks and the other faction in scary monster masks. I have a couple of monster masks already half built right now.

Hey Gunilla here is a closeup as requested. :-) The shader is a bit funky it blurs the forms a bit which is fairly suitable to what a clean gold finish would do? Also I did a couple of the masks in cel render showing the actual polys, I am not using sub-d's with these. These were made in zbrush, starting with a flat plane modeled roughly into the shape of a flat face.

Mark-
Ferx-
Handlebar-
Shakes-
Gord- thanks all.

Octopus- Thanks. A lot more stuff will be added to the scene. This is just the start.

Gunilla- Yes, Gassy Mack belongs to the rival faction. One side wears cartoon animal heads and the other side wears monster masks and such-like freakish headgear. As for Mack I think I am going to change his colours to something more earthy or industrial.

So I was thinking about where my picture is going and I realized that building out a full blown battle scene in the manner I had intended would be really difficult in the remaining time and would probably just make me miserable. So the way I see it is I either build out a battle scene using a bunch of mismatched models or using repeated models. Neither of which options I particularly care for. So another option I am considering is changing the project alltogether. As an alternative I thought I might do a sort of sprawling scene with numerous little tableaus. Something in the manner of Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights or the Last Judgement. This approach might be more suited to the group of models I am working on. There would be a bunch of mismatched models but in this case I think it will suit the scene much better. Each tableau within the picture could then have models appropriate within that happening.

In any case I intend to just keep on building crazy stuff and will put what I have together at the end.

mdavid
09-20-2007, 12:07 AM
It's fun watching your characters develop here. The tableau idea sounds excellent. Your characters are so unusual and original that pretty much any scene you drop them into will become interesting. As Plato once said, 'Go soapy go!'

Not Plato? I must have read it here then

Treeman looks excellent. It might be fun to see a group of tree men in slightly different poses, so you'd get an idea of a small forest of them. I think the shadow he casts contributes a lot to his appeal. I don't know what could make him look any better. At first I was thinking of a few random clumps of moss or leaves, but I kind of like the deciduous look
