Hi there,
I've been trying to displace an object using maya's displacement material and I was wondering if there was a way you could do it to the actual model before the render, more like a deformer or something?..

Say I wanted to displace the ground a character was walking on with a hieght map or something, I would have to render it to see if the character was on the ground properly because the undisplaced mesh wound't be acurate..

thanks - pete

If your ground plate is a flat surface, it's easy. Go hypershade, create a height field node (in general utilities). Scale it to fit your ground plate, then atach your displacement map to it. That's all. You can increase height field's resolution to get better shape.

Thanks man, I just got it to work. It's a pitty it only works on a flat plane though....

Height field utility is a non-renderable plane itself, usefull for adjust diplacement height.

yeah, thats pretty much what I'd like to do but I don't think it's possible... Maby I'll do it in Bryce or something then import it back into maya?
