I've been hearing about some new driver architecture (in both nvidia and ATI drivers) that let's you render your graphics card output straight to your harddrive rather than to the monitor, so you can get realtime capture of your desktop.

Does anyone know anything about this, and how to access this feature? Apparently the ability to do this has always been there, but it's never been looked at in the software drivers until now.

asked my 3dmax5 guru, and she said "under the animation menu there's a 'make preview' option". it seems that does something similar.

as for nvidia tools themselves, check an nvidia application called quadroview:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=quadroview_2.04.16

apparently it has a feature to allow you to capture video card output from various file formats to avi format.
