CGTalk - hair fx, not working

i tried this hair tutorial http://www.noboundrees.com/yinako/tut/pfxhair/pfx_hair_design.htm
whiles the hair that was shown looked lush and soft. the hair i created looks like a comb over. can anyone tell me why? i followed every step. please help if you can. i have a model on my harddrive that's dying for hair.

i didn't read this tutorial but it looks like the path follow/attract and curve follow/attract/maxdistance attrs. of your brush need to be played with ...under behavior->forces
