Researchers at USC have taken another step towards that holiest of sci-fi dreams: the 3d holographic display. Using a spinning mirror covered with a "holographic diffuser," a special DVI implementation, and a high-speed projector, the team's device can project a three-dimensional image that can be viewed from 360 degrees -- regardless of the viewer's height and distance. That's impressive, but that spinning mirror looks pretty dangerous. Check a video of the system in action after the break.

Its very impressive and I'm glad efforts are still being made to improve holographic technology. However I do not understand electronics etc.

I understand that its basically a revolving mirror that is used as a projection plane, but where is the projector itself? Is it built into the mirror somehow projecting outwards?

I am very interested in holographic technology and would be interested to know what education is required for such a field.

I do believe the projector is above it.

Oh! I see what you mean - the video jumped ahead of that bit for some reason!

That is a great idea. So the difficulty in such a set up would be to position a project above it and then just have the mirror on a motor at high speed. I wonder how much that setup would cost to implement. It seems such a simple beauty...

It's nice, but I doubt they are going in the right direction. The whole spinning mirror idea is just not practical for a general use, and also not very safe. I am trying to imagine someone throwing his Wii controller at that thing, or the mirror breaking and starting to fly around your living room during a video night with your friends :D. Though I guess putting it behind a - (bulletproof?) glass like in the video takes care of that at least. I'm a layman, but I guess the parts would also need regular maintenance and there are probably some physical/technical limits as to how big such a device can become without starting to cause a whole lot of issues. However, those are all things you can probably get around somehow, but the biggest issue I see is this: because the mirror is pointed at an upward angle, the picture will start becoming more and more distorted the higher your eye level - though it will still be watchable within a certain slim range. Looking even slightly from below, though, will destroy the illusion almost immediately and become quickly impossible at all. Also, people will want to be able to carry smaller versions of it like cell phones or digital cameras and use them safely on the beach or while driving and this technology just doesn't allow it. Nice try, but this isn't it.

Fantastic! Could be very useful in modeling. Of course you would need a 3D wacom tablet :D

The few holographic displays that I've seen or companies that I've talked to that are on their way to working versions always talk about air traffic controllers, and more uses along the industrial sectors than entertainment purposes.

This could be a real boon as a tool for anyone dealing with spatial problems.

Very cool stuff.

DAMN YOU ALL! In 1991 me and some classmates were quasi jokingly discussing the future of television with my physics professor. I said that with strategicaly placed cameras and with interpolation techniques, you can project a holografic image on a spinning mirror. A classmate of mine said: "but to make that possible you'll need a lot of bandwith. It won't fit". I admitted it was true and we called it a day. Yep, those were pre mpeg compression era and fiber optics was kinda in it's infancy. How ironic! I sould patent all the ideas I still have floating in my skull before I read about it on line somewhere.

Yes and from any angle. OMG that would be awesome! I hope I see it in my lifetime.

Good news, everyone! You already can! But for that you have to get up from the couch and go to the stadium or wherever the game takes place :p. But then you get it all, in real 3D, from any angle, with HDR and even SmellVision (tm)! :D

I had no idea that going to the Super Bowl was as easy as getting off the couch.
Also I'm suprised that the almost impossible to get tickets are seated at every angle in the stadium.

Well, I thought putting a smiley behind every sentence would be a sure giveaway that I was trying to make a little joke. Maybe it wasn't very funny after all, but you can't really blame a man for trying. Can you?! And God, what was I trying. I truly was!!! Seeing the extent of my failure however makes one thing clear to me: I'll never be a comedian. And probably for the better.

And now I stop before the thread gets shut down because of me talking rubbish and offtopic, I think I need a good night's rest...
