View Full Version : Vehicle: WW2 "M20"
Berserker 04-02-2003, 08:07 PM Hello CG talk! :surprised
I'm making this truck based on a US M20 from WW2 for my demo reel. I'm not going for realism, just something close. I'm planning on "punking" it up just to give it a bit more character. (Think Tank Girl.) I've enlarged the wheels and some other details just to push the style a bit.
I'm unwrapping it now, but its NEVER too late to add to or change it; so bring on those coments :buttrock:

...And here are some Final Gathering Renders of it:

GrooVn, you should really use better manners when posting here. I see you are relatively new here, so you should remember that when you joined CG Talk, you would have read some stuff about being courteous when posting critiques.
Kindly adopt some eloquence before you post again.

I am sorry Bezerker. I shouldn't have used such bad manners. I am much chastened. Actually your model is very nice, and I am just jealous because I could never do work as well as you. I hope that you won't hate me, and we can be friends.
Sincerely GroovN

Hey, here's a pic of the bottom. Thanks for the comments everyone, including GrooVn.
Although I was shaking with rage after I read your post, I'm turing my anger into motivation. I'm working on "uncrappifiying" the model right now. Just, spell my name right next time.
Yes, we can be friends.

Groovn, it's one thing to say it looks like goat ass, it's another to be all sarcastic in your fake apology.
I think you really hurt his feelings and you should feel just as bad as he does now.

Some reference images I'm using, the line drawing is from a model kit.
Lordmachuca, if its possible, I'd go out and buy the model kit for the vehicle you want to build. It's ALOT easier when you can pick up and look around the part you're modeling!
Anyone have some good reference to help me turn this more punk? I've been looking at Tank Girl comics, but thats about it...

Ignore what GroovN said, in all of his arrogance. Your model is looking really nice and will only improve once it's textured. Don't let people who are obviously insanely jealous with your level of skill get you down. Even as it is your model looks great, and further changes can only help to improve it.

Hay Dude the Tank looks cool:beer: Keep up the good work that Grooven guy must be one of those damn animators who can't model.
Can't wait to see more so work harder:insane:

Hi, I'm almost done unwrapping everything, but I couldn't wait to start texturing now.
http://www.vfs.com/~peterhogan/wheels_test.jpg
This M20 isn't part of a regular force, so it hasn't been kept in good condition. Also, since it's been used in the harsh arctic climate for a while now, salt has rusted through the layers of paint in many places. Later, I think I'll model chunks of snow caught in the treads too.
I like where it's going, but it doesn't feel right yet...
Here's a Final Gathering render too:

Hey Gremlin, thanks for the compliment, heheh! Actually, I was quoting the vile comments of the insidious "GrooVn", near the top of the thread... Oh, and there are a couple of links to renders without wireframe up top for your viewing pleasure.

imho get rid of the skull, you can instead do antiroll bars, or metal fencing around, something else.. the skull totally kills your model.
very nice modelling

Thanks for the comments everyone, I hope to finish this up in the next few days!
It_Girl: Thanks for the motivation! (If you want to see pretty, wait til I add pink bows all over it... ;) )
RmachucaA: I have to agree, the model has enough character without the skull.
PS: I updated the first post with my latest render...

Haha, that tank is awsome! That model puts mine to shame :scream: It looks like it would be a fun one to texture up, but alas, I still have 3 more projects to finish!

Thanks for the comments! I would love to write a tutorial sometime....I'm too busy now, but in about 2 months I'll have more time.
http://www.vfs.com/~peterhogan/BodyUVs.jpg
Here are the UVs of the MainBody superimposed over the color map. As you can see, some parts I hardly unwrap at all (like the top left corner) and others I try to keep all in one piece. Keeping it together made it very easy to paint the texture, as I ddint have to refer back to my model wondering, "what were these UVs supposed to be again?!". In a few places the UVs ended up inverted, but in those cases I just inverted the image in that area in photoshop. It was only a minor hasle, but next time I'll fix that kind of problem in the UV editor before painting any textures.
Rigging and textures almost done... woohoo! :airguitar
