The default filter is a box filter, which would suit in most cases.
The cone filter will give smoother caustics. You may change the filter size as 'larger filters cause softer caustics'

We use box filter the majority of times. Trial and error
Remember to
- use a Physical light shader to ensure physical correctness
- make the object casting caustics not diffuse
- make the object receiving caustics diffuse
- be patient young padawa
Wicked luck (Ali G style)
