View Full Version : Can brushes be loaded with paint from the Mixer pallete?
Deathbliss 09-03-2007, 01:39 AM Hey I'm a n00b so I get to ask stupid questions like this :P I was just wondering if Corel Painter emulates, in all its functionality, one of those things painters usually have on an arm that hold all the colors and where the painter mixes colors then applies a brush to them. For some reason the word escapes me right now :/ Anyhow I was watching one of the Bob Ross - The Joy Of Painting things and I was wondering how far we could emulate his technique using Corel Painter. Part of that would be the ability to mix colors and apply them directly to a brush, or knife, or whatever. If this can't be done in Corel Painter then I might just drop a reply in the request thread.
Don't worry - more stupid questions to come...

In the traditional painting world, it's called a palette.

In Corel Painter, the term "palette" is used to refer to many items, Tools palette, Layers palette, Channels palette, Colors palette, Papers palette, etc..... Custom Palettes, and one that is used in a similar way to the traditional painting world's palettes, the Mixer palette.

Usng the icons at the bottom of the Mixer palette, we can (from left to right) click them to:
Enable Dirty Brush Mode which means (with some brush variants) the brush will pick up existing colors and carry them in following strokes
Apply Color to the Mixer Pad
Mix Color in the Mixer Pad
Sample Color from the Mixer Pad (individual colors)
Sample Multiple Colors from the Mixer Pad (works with some brush variants)
Zoom in on the Mixer Pad (or zoom out by holding down the Ctrl/Command key and clicking)
Pan the Mixer Pad
Clear and Reset the Canvas (the Mixer Pad)
In the Mixer palette menu, we can access several commands to do other things like saving the Mixer colors, saving the Mixer Pad, loading saved Mixer colors, loading saved Mixer Pad, and so on.
In the default Painter X palette layout (as it was when Painter X was installed) the Mixer palette is docked just below the Colors palette. If you don't see it, use Window > Color Palettes > Show Mixer.
Use Painter X Help Topics to learn more about the Mixer palette and how to use it.

Yeah, I found the mixer pallete and probably should have mentioned that. But do you have to use the dropper tool or is there a way to apply a brush to the mixer pallete directly? That's what I was wondering...
Thanks again!

I'm confused now. You pick a brush, you set the size, opacity, grain, etc. which effectively means that your brush is loaded with paint, then you can choose a colour from the Mixer Palette. Or you could do it the other way around, colour first. What is it that you are wanting to do in the Mixer Palette that isn't done initially by picking a brush and medium and adjusting the settings to suit?

Yes, to use colors from the Mixer Pad you have to pick the color from the Mixer pad using one of the two Sample Colors icons (listed and described above).
All of this and more is in Help Topics.
Please take time to read it to find answers to very basic questions like these.
Thanks,

I think I know what you mean, I've seen a few Bob Ross shows where he loads his brush with two different colours at the same time, one on each side. Then he gets a nice two colour brush stroke. It would be cool if painter could do this. Any ideas?

Ideas? Yes.
If you make the effort to read Painter's Help Topics, you'll learn a lot of these things on your own.
Using Corel Painter, there are several ways to paint with more than one color in a brush stroke.
Read these two tutorials on my PixelAlley site:
Painting with More than One Color in the Brush Stroke, A Few Methods (http://www.pixelalley.com/tips_and_tuts/more_than_one_clr_in_stroke.html)
Color Variability From Gradient, a Two-Point Gradient (http://www.pixelalley.com/tips_and_tuts/clr_vrblty_frm_gradient.html)
