View Full Version : Animation test...
jimcoldt 04-02-2003, 04:58 PM Hello everyone...
I've been on here for a while but finally got up the courage to post some work in progress...
I made this rig (based partially on Michael Comet's ideas) a while ago. It took a couple weeks and totally fried my brain...more than it already was. Anyway, after being burned out for a while, I made this animation a couple days ago. It's mainly to test the limitations of the rig. I plan to do more sequences like this soon.
You can see the animation by clicking here: (http://members.aol.com/jimcoldt/WallClimbPost.avi)
movie is in DivX format.
any feedback is appreciated!

Hey Jim! Great job on the animation (and the lighting!). I only have 2 crits:
1) When the character pushes off the wall, I think it's a little too quick. Maybe you need to add more weight to it, like when his foot impacts the wall, his whole body weight should probably fall over that foot before he launches up to the rail. It seems like he just sort of "touches" the wall with his foot.
2) This is more editing than animation related. I think the way the camera cuts between shots towards the end is a bit jarring. Like when it goes from the CU of the char, then back to the original shot, and back again to the CU. I think you should either hold the long shot longer or just cut it completely.
Other than that, great job! The rig looks like it's holding it's own.

I agree that the editing is faulty. You could have just two cuts for this short very animation for review purposes.
First you establish the scene then cut to closer shot after he got a grip on the railing.
Or you could add a third cut when he jumps over the railing to finish the action.
Nice anim....
Personally, I like the speed that he comes off the wall at the bottom - it doesn't give the impression that he's got some kind of superhuman power - that is how I'd expect a real human to do it....
Do you have a link to where Michael Comet made his suggestions about the rig? I'd be interested in seeing that...
Thanks

Nice.. :applause:
The only thing that doesn't look convincing to me is the second push with his leg.
He looks as if he is pushing of something firm while at the same time you can see that he barely touches the wall.

Actually, most of the information was from the Max5 Tutorial that Comet wrote for Discreet.
Thanks for the crits! I'll definitely take some of your suggestions.

Doing 3d animation tests for Marvel, game companies looking for you, every 3d student in the Art Institute trying to cram into your classes...where do you find the time to do such good work?!
Anyway Jim, the animation looks great and I'm glad you posted it. Too bad not more people have responded.
Pretty soon we can post our AIPH Unreal Tournament 2003 level!!

we are waiting for the new test

First of all, thanks to everyone for posting comments. Feedback is everything.
(aww, shucks, d_hansbury... you're too kind. And I wish all you said was true. )
I didn't end up changing a whole lot... a couple in/out tangents you'll probably not notice anyway. But I did, however, kill the cut back to the low angle. It was too quick anyway--I guess I just liked the 'lunge' from that angle. Oh well.
As for the "push" off the wall, I'm using reference video--almost to the frame. So as ClaraPandy mentioned, if you think it's impossible, go watch Dean Alexandrou do it on video...
Anyway, thanks again!
I'll be posting a new one I just finished shortly...
Here's the link to the update (the old one's gone)...

Okay....
Here's my new test...
Once again, I'm using video reference, for those that care...
The problem was, I wanted the animation to be 'loopable'... so I had to reset the character into position. Honestly, I think he needs a longer run towards the wall for it to work. Maybe not...I don't know... I've looked at it for too long.
In the end, I'll probably just show the clip once amongst other clips I'm making anyway, so the point may be moot.
By the way, I wish I could do this move in real life:

As usual, comments are appreciated...you all rock.

i think the part before the landing is too slow.. almost like a slow-mo mode or like he's on moon... and the anticipation when he kicks off the wall is not enough, looks like he's bounced off the wall effortless. and a little balancing after he landed would look nice.. you know.. nothing is perfect... so even a proffesional will land unbalanced.(a bit i guess.) :)
nice lightings and particles tho.
As wat PANZER had say....and 1 more thing to add it is the leg when going out.....its a bit flow....and the hand when he was hold the gate....its should be streght right?! coz to affort the weight?! Anyway, just my litle comment... And hmm...i like the fisrt part of the animate :bounce:
