Title: Portrait of Louis Bertini
Name: Shraga Weiss
Country: United States
Software: Photoshop, XSI, ZBrush

Hi,

this is a model I've been working on for a while. It's based on one of my favorite paintings by Jean Augustie Ingres... I really wanted to study the expression in the face and the tension in the pose. Also I wanted the challenge of imagining what he would look like from all angles..

I used xsi to model the basemsh and render.. zbrush for the hires modeling and texturing

C&C welcome

Here is a link to some other angles of the face:

well, you have a very fine modelling, very close to the Ingres painting... and you get very well the "heavy" pose, typical of the rich notables of the end of the 19 th century, that Ingres used for Mr Bertin... (a newspaper director, in fact...)...
one crit, but maybe you did'nt intend to do that, is that I think you "loose" something, in the lighthing set up, and maybe the DOF, of the particular mood of the painting... I don't want to say that the 3d render doesn't match the pictural effect, it's of course a transposition, . Just want to say that, having a fine model, maybe the render is a little too "straight", it miss something of the yellow, "heavy" light, if I can say, Ingres used when he did the set up of the model and paint him... anyway, you have a very interestying piece...

You should be quite proud man, you've captured the original painting well. The only area it breaks down is the pose of the right hand and the cuff of the jacket which is a little to stiff for the velvet material.

All in all very impressive, and I like the way you gave him a personal touch by aging him slightly from the original painting.

Take care,

good stuff, u captured it well :) I speciallu like the shading in the face and the hair.

I also think face works for the render, but I think in the other angles look kinda weird around mouth area.

oooooo my favorit Ingres portrait, man if you ever get the chance go to louvre and check this amazing painting out, you should!

nice execution, some of the shading needs more work, and the colours are way to saturated. But still its a nice copy.

Awesome. Like the way it's executed. Only little thing would be too stron reflection on the chair and face texture makes it look like he's wearing face powder. It's too even.

But it's still an awesome piece.

Congratulations!

Thanks so much for all the replies!! I will post some more details of the model soon..

Celmar, SamsonsReaper - thanks :), and I agree that the colors can't match completely to the original. Mainly because I wasn't trying to replicate it exactly but rather interpret it into 3d and pay tribute as a fan of Ingres.. and also because I am using a reproduction I found as reference - and I really don't know how different it is from the original one in the louvre but I would assume that it's significantly different as these digital reproductions usually are (color scheme wise). I did actually see the original at the louvre but it was many years ago..

Julien - Thanks a ton!

makaka, Milad, Dave - thanks a lot!

Dror - toda achi! the piece took me several weeks since I've been working on it after work and the amount of details on the original are endless. Most of the time I spent on the modeling... The face has a lot of detail the clothes are all traditionally modeled in xsi

Raf - thanks man! - I like how you see what I was aiming for

LilDragon - Thanks for the complement and the plug!!!

Magda - good to hear from you.. Thanks for the tips on 16th century dresses back at VFS :)

Jared - How's it going man?! Thanks for the comment!!

Infinite - Thanks a lot man! I trust you have a good eye for these things ;) the hair is Shave&haircut from Xsi with some post work and color corrections.. I will post some details of the model soon..

Herb - thanks buddy!

DDS - thanks.. The mouth is supposed to be like an "english mouth" - extremely slim

zipete! - haha - I swore to you that if not ever again then at least for a couple of months I will not try and match another painting in 3D.. I'm pretty sure I can stand by that

nielot, DEAN, akademus, xvampire, wonderer, Yuan - thanks for all the nice words

joe - thanks man! - good to hear form you

That's a great piece, well done!

Could you possibly give some info and tips regarding your workflow?

How did you bring the mesh back into XSI from Zbrush; was it as a Hi-Res mesh with bump or lower res with displacement?

Did you unwrap the low-res mesh in XSI first for textures and paint them in Zbrush?

Excellent job, well done :D

It is a fantastic modelling work, but the illumination and shading are not that good. They look better in te painting.

Congrats!

ey Jamieson! - We need to IM at some point -I want to know what were the latest developments you had.. :)

Simon - thanks man

Oglu - seriously there's no secret in the lighting.. I just used a bunch of spot-area lights where needed to try and match the painting.. all the lights are inclusive or exclusive of certain objects in the scene so they will effect only the objects I wanted and not others.. I render each element in a separate pass with an alpha so I can play with their levels in comp.. I didn't bother seperating the spec because with all the different spec options in the fastskinshader it's to complicated anyway.. And then I have an occlusion pass ontop of that.. The hair shader is the default xsi hair shader but there's a ton of tweaking in the settings (% hair rendered , color, frizz, kink etc.)

Alvarroooo - thanks for dropping a line! - greetings from Israel.. :) - I keep changing locations every time we talk

KnickKnack - The way I work with Zbrush is that I first try to achieve as much as I can in xsi before I go into hires modeling. It's usually worth the time for me to build a very solid base mesh that fits volume wise to what I'm aiming for and with nicely spaced topology also that way the xsi unwrap won't need as much tweaking.. Because I hadn't the intention to animate the face I just used a bump on the hires mesh and rendered it in xsi but the displacement map worked almost as well when I tested it.. I'd say about 90% of the full res quality

fufshmig -haha.. I'm impressed you took the time to figure out the hebrew letters for "shalom".. how do you spell 'taco' in spanish? :)

Here is a CU pic of the model from another angle with hair.. (The hair is built to look at its best in the painting angle but I did comb it to fit his do from all angles as much as I could :))

just amazing. could you list the specific settings and numbers punched in the hair editor? i am trying to work with this as well but it's hard due to the slow rendertime. speaking of rendertime, how long did it take to render one frame?

i will say it again, amazing work!

nice! i had just discovered this painting by Ingres while studying napoleonic history in my spare time. i had thought of doing something like this (not in 3D though - just a 'copying from the masters' kind of exercise).

troutmaskreplica - ya.. i'm thinking of maybe doing a 2d copy myself as well.. much less render time involved ;)

Nice work Shraga. Do you miss Santa Monica? How's Israel? ;-)

I feel like the hands could use a little work, though. They're too smooth, lacking character.

I chose this picture because the character seems real
the face features, shadows, hair, and forehead, are detailed very well
as well as mouth, eyes and nose.
I think that fingers are disproportionate.
you have a smale mistake here, but i loved your "photo".
