Congradulations to the winners!

Since I was probably the last one to start on the last animation I thought I better get started on this one before the last two days. ;)

Good audio for this one! I'll try and do both this time.

Good luck all.

Animation Acting Challenge #11

There are two topics to choose from

1. Going off a cliff either intentionally or unintentionally

Or

2. Audio Clip from Multiplicity
Link (http://www.moviewavs.com/php/sounds/?id=gog&media=WAVS&type=Movies&movie=Multiplicity&quote=clonejobcost.txt&file=clonejobcost.wav)

Doug: "Say I'm interested. What would a... What would a, uh... you know... nothing fancy, just the basic, just, you know... just a basic, you know, clone job cost?"

Rules
Read me!
- Have fun animating!
- Use any rig and any animation software you like.
- Animate with any medium (3D, 2D, or stop-motion)
- You're open (and encouraged) to post your progress here if you'd like any comments and critiques.
- No time/frame restriction on the animation. Just remember that the more complex it is the longer it will take to finish. Make it by the due date!
- You can do both topics if you have the time. Either separately or as one animation if possible.
- You may add time before and after the audio clip, but please do not change the timing of the audio.
- A separate final submission thread will be created. Post your final animation there. I'll make the thread a few days before the deadline.
- Textures and lighting are optional. Playblasts are acceptable. Just make the acting clear and easy to see.
- Use any resolution and aspect ratio... but keep the file size manageable. As for codecs, preferably one that's common like quicktime or windows media. My recommendation would be Quicktime.
- When posting for final entry please state which topic you are animating.
- Adding music is optional, just don't make it distracting.

We'll do this for about a month (September 1st - September 27th). Then we'll vote (September 28th - September 31st). We'll vote for the best animations AND suggest topics for the next challenge in that time.

Feel free to ask questions about the challenge. We're still looking to improve how the challenge is conducted, we're open to suggestions.

Tips:
-Don't know where to upload your final animation or WIP? I recommend using www.vimeo.com. Free to register. You get to watch a streaming flash video and if you're registered, users can also download the original video source.
-The audio can also be set to mono instead of stereo, that may help keep the file size down.
-Please consider people from other countries that have certain websites filtered out. If you have webspace it would be nice to upload there to along with any streaming flash websites, at least for your final animation. I don't want anyone to miss out on the work you've done.

Ack!! My post became #3 :argh:

Thought I'd like to mention that if you'd like to make a separate WIP thread in the WIP forum that's fine. You can just come here and post a link to your thread saying you made an update. You might get more views that way too.

Congratulations to everyone who entered! Again, I wish stupid work didn't pull me in over time at the last minute. Bah!

Anyway, I'm going to try my hat at this as well. I think I'll go for the lip sync one. By the way, never seen the movie Multiplicity, is it any good?

Alright so I'm trying the lip sync animation but when I bring the sound file into Maya there is a lot of static going on in the timeline, however if I do a playblast it sounds ok. Is there any solution to this problem?

Hmmm...I should probably put this in the Maya or Animation subforum.

Here's a WIP.

http://www.youtube.com/v/W4uXiypGSVw

It's only the lip sync portion, which is roughly done at the moment. I'll block in the action later this weekend and fix up the lip sync some more. Watching it from the playblast made me realize what was wrong more than the view port. Any questions, comments, critqiues are welcome.

Small update. Fixed the lip sync a bit more and added very basic action. I know for some of the lip sync certain mouth shapes are slower, which I'll speed up. One part that is bugging me is the line "just the" before the accented 'Basic' line. It seems way too fast. Perhaps I need to slur it?

Bubai, for your lip sync do you use a dope sheet at all? I don't currently, probably sure, though I just use the sound wave to help guide me. If you use a dope sheet for the syncing do you just listen to it over and over again figuring out the phonems frame by frame or do you use any audio program to assist you in some way?

That question can apply to any animator really. Just curious.

Oh yeah, if something needs to be worked on a lot please give a bit more direction. It maybe a problem I haven't noticed just yet or might not know what to do. Thanks for the comments however.

Hi Guy In Rubber Suit, First off all I like to know u, I'm not an experienced animator.

Well I do the lip sync as u did, just hearing the sound clip, no dope sheet or no any kind of program. Mainly I maintain just one thing atleast one frame gap between two targets, but definitly it depends on the sound clip. Actually it has done just based on what we r hearing not based on the individual letter and then break down the word. For an example :

Guy In Rubber Suit :becomes to: Ga-a-ee ee-n ra-a-b-a-ar oo-ut. so I will use
"aa-e e a-b-a o-u" I do the tongue movement seperately if it vissible to the camera.

I think u should read the documents on www.keithlango.com (http://www.keithlango.com/) or www.comet-cartoons.com (http://www.comet-cartoons.com/) for doing good lipsync.

Ooh, sorry for the late response. But yes, if you'd like to submit what you'd like in the final thread just post it here or send me a PM if you have something to turn in the final thread but can't put it when the final animation thread becomes available. Congratulations on getting a job (hope it's one that you like :)). I understand if you won't be able to complete the contest. I've been wanting to animate with you guys but my time has been at work too.

But I did get some time and wanted to animate. I immediately thought about the topics here when I had time to exercise my animations skills. So... here's just a quick animation :D

Guy In Rubber Suit, subdivmaniac: lip syncs look fine. Though I would've gone for the body acting first before lip sync. Guy In Rubber Suit, if a part of the line is giving you problems then you can probably wait to work on it later. I think if you can make the body language "speak" a bit louder you might not have to worry about the lip sync as much.

serguineh: Very nice, I like the forward movement you have with some parts of the audio. But I think it could be a bit too strong with the "nothing..nothing fancy" part. Also I'd work a bit more with the camera angle, right now he's right in the middle. Since it's just him talking you can probably zoom in to a mid shot and give some room on the left side of the screen so it looks like he's talking to someone off screen.

If you're unable to make this challenge I hope you can make it for the next one. I'll look into making it a Halloween special. :)

Here's an update finally. Focusing more on the body now, cleaned up some of the lip sync. I'm too tired tonight to work any more but I'll definitely get some done tomorrow. Man this is awesome.

Thanks for the tips SirRon. I dunno, I guess I work better with lip sync first. So far it hasn't bothered me or anything. But thanks though, I'll definitely keep them in mind next time.

Hmm.... I'm thinking of changing the format here... What if we start the voting at the beginning of the new month rather than the end of the current challenge? That way when the front page plug announces the new challenge more people will come in and check out the challenge along with being able to vote for the previous challenge. I want more people to see your animations.
