Title: Exams are coming...
Name: Ondrej Karlik
Country: Czech Republic
Software: 3ds max, VRay

I have originaly created this picture for our student comunity server as part of its logo for exam period (it was quite small, about 150*150 px). Later, I decided to make a high-res version and tried to push the level of realism as far as I could. This is the result.

I had quite a dilemma whether to use DOF or not. In this version, I am using V-Ray camera DOF

Lacrevette, gnassbasti: here is clay and wire render:
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/8421/clayka4.th.jpg (http://img66.imageshack.us/my.php?image=clayka4.jpg)http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/3334/wiresc2.th.jpg (http://img66.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wiresc2.jpg)
I am sorry for the quality, I used low GI settings to speed up the rendering. If you want I can provide you higher quality pictures.

As you can see, the geometry is quite simple. The key element is the HDRI map for both reflections and illumination. I downloaded one from internet, then tweaked it to suit my needs.
The irregularities in box are made with simple noise modifier in 3dsMAX, the details on "pill sheet" (I am not sure if I am using the right term...;)) were created by displace map.

I started this work about 3 months ago, but I was really working on it only for about 2 weeks.

I am sorry, but can you be more specific, what exactly would you like to know? I dont know what to describe, becouse this scene is really simple and in my opinion there were no tricky parts. I spent most time selecting the right HDRI map. The only interesting information I can think of is that I used Linear Workflow and I strongly reccomend using it in every picture. You can find informations about it at the official Chaos group forum.

Hehe nice "afternoon" render, but AWARD? I thought that it was a HONOR to get award earlier days. Mastery in sense of art and technical skills. But nowdays, it seems that you can get an award for a really avarage picture.....I drags the importance down. Its not a hornor anymore.

I think I will be a bad guy for this, but it just my opinion.........

hgDesign
09-05-2007, 12:24 PM
Jo dude, We are talking about art here. And art is not judged in how simple or how complicated a picture is, or how long it took to create it. It is judged in wether it creates emotions and feelings to the viewer. Your work obvoiously has done that, and so you have received an award for this. I have read at least one post here that the person gave you 5 Stars for the message and not particularily for the work. So, why not feel honored that you created some feelings with your work to others.

KeyCZ
09-05-2007, 01:03 PM
wow. I must say, I was shocked, when I saw that I recieved the award. Such a suprise, thanks ;)

radoxist: believe me or not, but I partially agree with you. My perception of my own work may be distorted (it usually is ;)), but i personally would not give myself award for this ;). In fact, I was quite suprised how much people like it. And after all, everyone have the right to have opinion, so you are not "bad guy" for me ;)

yes its a good render but as the poster himself mentioned, its not so hard to make a photoreal render of something so simple with the rendering tools that have been out for a few years now, HDRI maps and so on. but the concept of the piece as given by the title puts the work in a context that elevates it past the image itself. something very rare even in art museums, never mind on CG talk :)

2nd time I'm commenting on this thread... I just have to say I can't believe the negative comments about this image getting an award even appearing on this thread but in others across the forums! To the people doing this I have some words: quit being jealous that somebody's work is getting recognized in a good way and put out something worth looking at yourselves. It is an award worthy image and the fact people are complaining means the award is still worth a lot.

My 2 cents, I wish more images with a meaningful message like this one would be created. Peace!

Hi niva,
it's ok, I am not offended by these. Most of the people criticizing my award are my friends, and they have my permission to do so. I know them, and I am sure they are not jealous. I personally wouldnt give myself the award, as I said before...

hi,
the geometry is editable poly, with meshsmooth when nessesary (at the objects with round parts). I posted the wire without MS earlier, you can find it on the first page of this thread...

Hi! Great render!

I know it will sound a bit strange, but iīll say it anyway. As a soon to be pharmaceutical chemist, i can tell you that the sort of tablet you rendered is generally biconvex and has a dimmer specular highlight (cause of the manufacturing process...). Thatīs the only change i would suggest for a more photorealistic render.

I thought it could be an interesting insight.... sorry for my freakishness .

anyway, the render is flawless dude!

hi! thanks for this interesting suggestions. The pills are inspired by Paralen, which is Czech brand name for a mild painkiller. Its pills are really flat ;):

This is a REAL "Fake or Photo" Tread. Almost no one can say it's 3d or not, but we know it is. Astonish image ! Great level of care on the details, shaders and Anti-alias (Wich is a bad side of Vray imo).
Amazing result !

This is an interesting thread,

I originally clicked the thumbnail because I thought it was part of a larger image, though the quality of the render supra realistic, I found I enjoyed your thread more,

I understand why some people are so irritated about the award thing, but I think the fact that it sparked some conversations and observations that transcend the image, I think that could merit the award.

Hi,
