Is there a way to bring mesh animation and particles to lightwave from max 8/9? I want to use Max's particle system and animation tools, but LW's voxels for interaction and composite the final thing together in combustion or adobe premiere/ae for a school project.

There was some quite expensive tool for that, but it only supported max 6 or less I think and I doubt our school is gonna buy the license for that.

you can use a fbx plugin in max and lw to bring the models-texturing-animation into from max2lw. However, it does not support/export max particles, the particles and voxels would have to be made within lw.

Not sure do you have Point Oven or any access to mdd as that might help you in here. MDD records point order and position so it migh work out for particle translation from MAX to LW!

Hope this helps!

I don't think PO can export Particle Motions, because there are additional informations such as Particle life that MDD can't handle.

I've used Maya2LW to export Maya Particles to LW with success, really don't know if there's a way (other than coding some cool exporter) to do the same among Max and LW.
