Photoshop (http://www.adobe.com) is likely the typical answer here. But really, whichever 2D program you want is probably just fine.

ZBrush is not a 2D painter, it's a 3D-ish program in itself where you model things up from scratch. ..well they call it 2.5D.. ANYways, not to get into all of that, the point just is that ZBrush is not neccessairly the easiest thing to use in this context.

wow, thanks for setting me on the right track

you wouldn't happen to have any tutorials around or know any that lead to helping people make a sample texture for something in PS would you? thanks again btw.

No problem whatsoever.

There's a Photoshop forum here on CGTalk, just scroll down the list a bit and hit it up, you can probably find tutorials in there, and friendly people standing by with immense Photoshop knowledge. google (http://www.google.com) is always good as well of course, search for photoshop tutorials and I bet you'll find tons of hits.

I understand Paint Shop Pro is a pretty damned good alternative to Photoshop if you're not looking to spent a ton of money. PSP is shareware if I'm not much mistaken..possibly even completly free for private users. You can find stuff on PSP at paintshoppro.com (http://www.paintshoppro.com).

If you're running Linux there's the.. "GIMP" I think it's called?.. idunno, but it's supposedly a pretty cool program as well, also completly free.. but as mentioned, Linux only, so that's probably not a help at all :)

Texturing is a whole world in itself, prepare for slow and tedious work at first, possibly ugly results as well. It will pass though, given enough time and effort :)

There is a Win port of Gimp. I hear it's a lot more stable than what it used to be.

Gaggle, PSP is not shareware however it is extremly cheap and you can find it in basiclly any popular retail store selling software. It costs like $20 or less.
