Beautiful character design I loved how did you achieved this kind of creature, very interesting use of lights, textures, materials and this kind of what I would call: "anatomic aberration" :) deforming the body with an strong force in the character.
Your characters always fascinated me. (Sorry about my english). 5 stars from me of course.

Creepy, any chance another front view of the character.:)
Can you tell which is the front and which is the back? I sure can't. Limbs and things are going every which way. Not sure why you call him jester either, but he does look like he would be fun at parties. LOL
Still a great looking piece, even if I can't tell what is going where.

Thank you thank you! Happy to hear some comments after being a hermit with him.

webhead: yeah, he is a little funky, but as far as calling him jester... where he comes from thats what he is. :)

Hi Lex,

I think Jester is absolutely fantastic scary and weird, and yet he likes playing with his little toyball thingies...but he is in a leash, so does that mean he is evil or dangerous? Or do people just find him scary and think he is dangerous, so they tied him up? But then, that means that the people are evil and not Jester. So many things going on...

I love how he is resting on his little tripod thingy...

5 stars indeed,

Sofia

Lovely piece Alex, congratulations! I love the lighting in particular. Your award is well deserved. Somehow the featureless face of your jester reminds me of the creepy hooded figures in the Black Hole, dunno if you have seen this old sci-fi film....

May I also use the occasion to thank you for your many very helpful Gnomon tutorials, they were a great help to me...

Wow... thanks for the continued comments!

So I decided to take the last couple weeks and organize a tutorial series on the making of Jester. It clocks in at 18 hours, so it is an incredibly thorough and technical 'course' on character modeling/texturing/shaders/lighting using Maya, Zbrush, UVlayout, Bodypaint and Photoshop.

If you use these programs, I think it will be helpful. :)

hey Alex, great design and atmosphere - makes me think he is a slave on some interstellar zoo where he performs with his props. Perhaps his species has incredibly agile hands/fingers for doing tricks? I'd love to see him animated doing something along the lines of Bowie's character in Labyrinth.

Anyway 5 stars from me of course

He'd be a great plaything!

Bit dark though in the sense that some more light on him (I'm assuming it's a he, probably not a good thing to do) would enable me to see more details.

5 stars

02.22.08 - OK, I withdraw my comment about it being dark! Turns out my laptop display needed adjusting, so now The Jester is just perfect! And I can see all the details with no problem!
