View Full Version : AntiVirus Software friendly to CG Systems.
RockinAkin 08-31-2007, 11:18 PM Hi All,
Lately, I've refrained from using AntiVirus software since it tends to bog down my computer and steal resources while it's running in the background. But now I'm realizing I need at least something to help protect my system from viruses / spyware / malware.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good virus scanner / internet security software that will be friendly to a system that needs as much horsepower free and ready to use at any moment (low memory imprint, doesn't slow down rendering, etc).
Thanks!

just about all but the big ones like norton and mcafee are good. I use avast on my 64bit system and avg and zonealarm on my other computer desktop, then finally on my notebook I use trendmicro internet security. they all work much better than norton or mcafee. they dont bog down my systems just during normal operations.

I keep my work computers off line and man do they stay clean and in great condition for so much longer. But for my internet computer at home I've been using Avast which is the same scanner we are using at work. No complaints with it so far.

Best anti virus/spyware/malware/trojan/worm solution i know is called 'yank-network-cable-from-machine'. It takes about 20 seconds for a Windoze machine to get infected once it's connected to the net. My advice is you either unplug you workstation totally or you install linux (if possible, OS X is ok too).

I don't know about you guys, but I'm constantly looking up reference matrials online while I work, as well as tutorials and such when delving into something relatively new to me. Maybe when I can afford to get an additional computer I'll be able to unplug one of them though.
However, it's very common to transport files between computers and use external hard drives and such, especially when working with other people, so even if you're not plugged into the net you're not completely secure. Do you guys think that's a very legit concern, or not something you worry about too much?
Any more suggestions on good AV software for CG systems would be very welcome.

I'm running NOD32 Smart Security 3.0.something here on my XP64 system and never had a problem with it, it's no resource hog either. And i'm pleased with it's performance. :)

Kaspersky has never interfered in any way with me using a 3D software.

In our office we have Nod32 on all machines and servers.
never had a problem, Sometime I get reminded that I have an antivirus because it tells me that he updated himself....that's all.
before we had Karspersky, very good too, but a bit heavy during scans...otherwise a good choice.

if you are doing any distributed rendering, be sure you know which "ports" to disable in your anti virus software.
This is an issue that does comne up pretty regularly

Someone will probably rip into me, but I dont use any AV software scanning in the background.
Most routers act as a firewall, so thats that covered. Otherwise I have AVG installed and run a scan once a month or so, but in quite a few years its never found anything. Just dont download dodgey software, visit dodgey sites and so on.
To make an analogy, you dont need a condom if youre not sleeping around with the local whores ;-)

Avg used to be great since version 8 that has all changed.
Avg free has now joined the ranks of norton and the likes.

Indeed, I ran for years without a virus scanner. TBH the only reason I have one now is because I installed it before heading out to a lan party, and just havn't taken it out since... :)
You never know what you'll pick up at lan parties.. dirty places ...

I'll probably get ripped too, but I don't use any antivirus on two of my laptops since I had them.. it's been a year now. I run Vista and I rely on UAC (love it or hate it), firewall, defender and dialy doze of updates. My desktop XP does have an antivirus, but do plan to convert it to Vista 64 next week.
I am boggled by the people that say they have their computers off-line. I just can't even imagine doing that. Seriously... how? The slight benefit (mostly piece of mind), could no way be enough counter the complete lack of convenience.
Anyways, PC Magazine ran a test of anti-virus programs and they recommended AVAST or AVG. I have been big fans of AVG for many years now, but while it still got very good marks, AVAST would be the one I try out if I was installing all new software. Oh yea, and both are free, and use up minimal resources.
Just keep the heck away from Norton - absolute garbage.

Could you elaborate?
I've been with AVG for a while, and recently updated the installation on my laptop to v8.
I haven't found it to be any worse than 7.23, except maybe for the removal of a couple features that before used to be in the free version too.
For resident shielding if you're crazy enough to use outlook, scheduled or arbitrary scans it's pretty good and has one of the most frequent update rates of all AV softwares.
What puts it in the ranks of Norton in your opinion? Considering how terrible Norton is that is a pretty big statement :)

This is NOT an effective solution, particularly on Windows boxes. More than once have I encountered a Virus on installation media - where it is particularly harmful, because you're going to be running stuff.
My personal choice of scanners is Avast! Norton's has an excellent detection rate, but it's a bloated turd. AVG is free, but in the past I've caught it letting stuff through. Mcafee is similar to the bloated mess that is Norton's, without the excellent detection :)
The only point against Avast is the loud annoying american accent that announced every time there's a new virus database - and perhaps when you leave your PC running and it comes across a virus at 3 in the morning and sounds a klaxon :surprised:
Avast is free for home users - but you have to pay for a license if you're using it professionally. It comes with OSX and Linux varieties, so if you have a file server you can drop it on that to stop viruses spreading through that.

I'm a lucky guy as a few years ago, and for a few pennies, I have bought an elderly laptop. A new harddisk was needed, and that was it. It only serves for the Internet. The onter puter is never connected to the Web, except for registering software.
When the intallation of the OS (XP) and the applications on the laptop were done and everything worked fine, I used Ghost to create an image on dvd
I use a router (firewall) for the Internet connection, and Avast and spybotS&D as bodyguards.
This said, I had about two viruses in about five years.
And if there is an infection, it's easier to simply replace the image, and start anew than to go through all sorts of purification and initiation rites that all too often end by having to reinstall everything.
