Hi there,

I'm trying to buy a book for After Effects COMPOSITING (not for motion graphics, but for real-life compositing, visual effects) Any suggestion on a good book? I've done some research, found quite a few books, but not sure which one to pick.

THanks!

Mark Christiansen, Studio Techniques

there's others that give a great general overview of compositing and the techniques, but for AE specific, this is the one you want. ex-ILMer.

thanks for the title, I looked it up amazon.com, looking good. But are there step by step instructions? or are they all theories and concepts?

They don't have it in stock in the bookstore, so i'm unable to flip through the pages.

it's both, step by step and concepts. The other good comping ones are mostly concepts, or show a little bit of step by step in AE, Shake, etc. They don't show tons of step by step. Christiansen's book does. There's tutorials on almost everything a high-end compositor has to do on a daily basis, and he explains how and why you're doing it. Awesome book!

Be sure to check out Andrew Kramer's free compositing tutorials at Video Copilot: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials.html

And I would also recommend Mark Christiansen's book. Great stuff. Stu Maschwitz's "The DV Rebel's Guide" is also quite good if you want a good blend of after effect work and video shooting techniques.

Don't forget the DV Rebel's Guide by Stu Maschwitz:
