View Full Version : Character: Robot. (first post)
AlteredState 04-02-2003, 06:15 AM I feel kinda dumb posting this, since I've seen such awesome things on this forum so far.
Anyways, I just started doing 3d modeling and this is my first completed work. This was modeled in Maya. Some feedback would be appreciated.

Here's a link to the drawing I did after which I modeled the robot:

AlteredState the model is a pretty good start. I realize you haven't finalized the textures but, the way you have presented it is detracting from it. The issues I have with the model is the joints (elbows, hips, etc) do not look mechanically workable. I also would (this is just a suggestion) not render the model straight on, give us a 3 quarter it is always much more interresting.
I like the design of the shoulders. Very robotech masters.
Good progress.

I don't really know how to texture better than this yet. I just use the hypershader and apply some generic materials and colors. So obviously I need to look for some tutorials on that. I'm very much a n00b at all this. I have some fat Maya book I got at barnes&noble :)
The joints do not looks mechanically workable if they were conventional robotic joints. But the idea behind these appendages functioning looking the way they do is magnetism.
Here's a more 3/4 view of the upperbody:

Thanks for the feedback!!

Yea, I like the design. I have a robot posted on the next page if you wouldn't mind looking at it and giving me some feedback too. Let's see it when you get all the textures sorted out. Nice work so far! That glowing eye is ultra-cool!
nice start to bad theire are holes where his machineguns (hands) should be . maybe smooth the rings around the arms
keep em comming you can only improve skills :bounce:

dont feel dumb, everybody begins. youll get better, much better, this is a really good first work. it would probably be fun for you to find some texturing tuts now, do thoes and work with this model. then a lighting tut and do the same thing, you will be impressed with yourself when that is done, good luck with it

Hey thanks a lot guys.
Does anyone have some ideas on where to find tutorials for texturing in Maya?
