Here's a youtube clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeoIc7xd_fA) of the opening attack scene from X2. Lots of the bamf effect from the middle on.
Kyprolific, to start, will this effect be used in a live action shot? If yes, has it been shot already? It will help to know what you have to work with.
Also, I recall they went into some detail over the bamf effect in the special features of the X2 DVD. Have you checked that out yet?

Particles, particles and more particles. You need a plugin like Trapcode's Particular to even begin getting something like that. You would use Layer Emitters to "dissolve" the object and then use the Fractal Field, Spherical Field, Wind and Gravity to push the particles around and make them swirl. There's no general recipe here, it all depends on the footage you have and what look you're after.

I must agree with Mylenium. Lots and lots of particles and hard work. Sorry. No "make nightcrawler button" for this one.

You can also add liquify to that to get those streaky smoke plumes.
