Backburner works fine in a single-computer environment.

You say you can't find any documentation on it, which.. surprises me. Just hit up the MAX help, type in "backburner" in the Search box, and voila, you got 14 hits on that alone. You'll likely also find stuff on "job queues", "net render", etc etc.
