DivX is tricky. Since it's a DirectShow CoDec, not all versions of it show up for compression. Anyway, AE would be a bad choice to do this directly. I recommend exporting an uncompressed file and then converting it to DivX using VirtualDub, SUPERŠ or similar tools, all of which are available freely. If you're getting disk space problems, download the HuffYUV CoDec and use it for export.

If like me you've had 7-hour long renders crash at 85% completion because of faulty divx encoders, you'll learn to not trust the little bugger in after effects.

I use Virtualdub to mix with audio and export.

virtualdub + xvid

divx applies some kind of smoothing, I suppose it does that to hide blocking/quilting artifacts, and pretend it has better quality.
xvid, does not, so xvid return clearer images, but artifacts might be more obvios
but apparently no more in quantity than divx.

xvid videos also runs in mplayer32, divx not always

to save space a lossless codec works great.
