View Full Version : Plugins That Need To Be Upgraded.
Julez4001 08-30-2007, 02:15 PM PLUGINS THAT NEED TO BE UPGRADED.
Commerical or Free, which tools (did) you use and wish they would kee with LW 9.3:
Mind you, the free was created by the programmer and is always on their schedule but it needs to be said that someof us have become "needy" to the capabilities of their tools and wish to use it or see it more robust.
My List:
SURPASS
LW TRAILER
TB's Fake-Skin Shader needs to noded.
Matter of fact, all of TB tools
SG FERTILIZER
Prem's Surface Effectors (sure we can cheat it with nodes & gradients but his was so fast)
Fiber Fact...um never mind.
Shave and HairCut (please come back, every major app has it)
RIPPLE_S -
Node based version tools of POKE and TAFT
Feel free to add. If anything, just for people who don't anything about these tools, can become aware.

Nice list!
However, doesn't Prem work for NT nowdays? I see his name in the Engineering list. Or is it someone else? :)

i'd add simplerigger by Christopher Lutz to the list, the only auto rigger i've ever got on with.
http://www.animationsnippets.com/plugins/
the rigs good enough to use out of the box and simple enough to modify when needed.
it would be great if i didn't have to go back to 8.0 to use it.
i tried to contact him a while back to see if he was ever gonna update it, if not to see if he'd let someone else do it.
no reply :(

At a guess I'd say that he's concentrating on Messiah...if you're using both Lightwave & Messiah there's a good chance that the animation will be done in Messiah as it is soooo much easier. There's little point updating a character rigger for one app if you don't need it in another.
He still should have responded though

on the worley side i would say that fprime needs hypervoxel preview, sasquatch and g2 would be perfect if you could use fprime with them..

Nik,
thanks that you like 'SimpleRigger' so much that you even go back to v8.0 to use it. :)
I'm sorry if I should have missed your email - unfortunately I get an incredible amount of spam these days (up to 1,000+ post per day), so I might have missed that.
Anyway, it's true that these days I concentrate rather on messiah. Currently I have no plans to upgrade SimpleRigger, since I have the feeling that nowadays there are so many more auto-riggers around. Besides, I haven't even upgraded to v9 yet, so I cannot do that at the moment, sorry.

sasquatch and g2 would be perfect if you could use fprime with them..
Sasquatch is completly outdated, it would require a complete rethink of the plugin, fiber factory is way better than sasquatch. And g2 actually works with fprime!

These plugins no longer work with 9.x:
Fire & Smoke Generator
Joytrol (much to my chagrin)
HD_Caustics (I think)
Shadow Designer 2 (I think)

thanks for the reply christopher,
like i said in my above post, i love the "simplerigger" rig. it works straight out of the box and doesn't require me to delve to deeply into advanced rigging setups.
with it, i can rig my (very simple) characters in less than an hour including all weight maping and tweaks.
if ever you decide that you'd let a third party update it, i'm sure there would be somebody in the community who'd consider the job :)
thanks for your reply and great plugin

HDInstance,
HDInstance,
HDInstance,
TequilaScream,
All Dynamic Realities plugins
Surpasses,
Surpasses,
Surpasses...
And....MORE IMPORTANT...at least point-1 upgrades for LW that do NOT break these updates...

Interesting.. on his site (http://www.happy-digital.com), he says that HDCaustics is tested for LightWave 5.6 through 7. But for HDInstance, it says LightWave 7.5 and up.

Just found out that Evasion's Shadow Designer 2 has an update that lets it work with 9.
Looks like crap unless I use the classic camera tho.

I'm not too familiar with ShadowDesigner, but I'm wondering, would you know if it could it be something to use together with lw9's sss to cut down rendertime?
sss in lw9 is superfast if you use distant light, but dramatically slow if one use arealights or GI,
since shadowdesigner works (or looks) somewhat like arealights, maybe it could be something to use to speed up lw's sss.

Nah.. I wouldn't recommend using SD2 on a character. It's better suited for a ground or wall plane. It doesn't work too well on curvy sufcaces, esp. concave areas.

You can experiment with a seperate shadow pass using plain LW. Set yout object's alpha to shadow density then save your alpha. Turn off the SSS for this pass while rendering your shadow pass.
I doubt it would look good, mixing SSS and painted shadows.. But give it a try.

No, not really,.. from the ones mentioned here only HDinstance & FPrime asfaik.
Dpont keeps making great ones,...
...and Kevin made a dynamics ODEFL that looks pretty good.
LWCAD had a nice upgrade...
as far as older plugins being updated it has been somewhat quiet, still, many new great ones have been added.

Hmm...
There are plugins and then there are plugins... There are, for me, very few plugins that I actually use these days compared to LW7.x and 8.x. I use alot more scripts though, but that's because I have a friend who is quite good at L-scripting so he can help me automate alot of the stuff I do. :)
I'm not sure if scripts should be concidered as plugins though, since what they do are essentially things LW can do by default; they just makes life easier.

Flay used to have more going on in a DAY 10 years ago, than it does in a month nowadays.
The LW-plugin glory days passed a long long time ago.

Simple rigger still works with 9.3 with minimal tweaking :) This is a great plugin that should have been hardwired into Lightwave a long time ago. Once the auto rigging is complete in Layout, just manually check that the bones relating to key leg and arm joints are associated to IK, associate the bones with weightmaps, check the limb mover nulls aren't locked and presto, you have an instant rig.

hi all!!!
I have a couple of plugins as well:
1. SUPERGLOW - able to render animation with perfect field rendering without flicker render from LW Glow (argh!!! Newtek never tried to fix it. Ridiculous).
2. FIRE from worley lab - Fantastic plugin for fire simulation, very slow, but is very realistic render.
3. SHAVE AND HAIRCUT - Sorry SAS, but S&H is the best!!
4. IMPACT - I did like him, but will need very improvements on workflow.
bye all
