View Full Version : hopefully an easy boolean question
Konstruct 04-02-2003, 04:47 AM I`m really new at maya so bear with me-
when I try and make a union between to polygon models, both models dissapear-
y?
In the reading it says this:
"Failed Boolean operations
Occasionally Boolean operations may fail for topological reasons.
If this happens, the objects that were selected before performing the (failed) operation become invisible. To return to the original state, undo the last Boolean operation."
-so this is all fine and good, but how to you fix topological errors?- i can`t even figure out what that is,
Pleeease help!

Booleans in Maya are such a headache...
In my case, what I usually do is first, delete history and cleanup the geometry... I hardly ever use Booleans in Maya, and if I do it gives me problems... after I do those 2 steps, it usually works.
Good luck...

igth cool, but I need a lil more info,-
what is cleaning up geometry, and what are some tips in doing so

i noticed Booleans dont like geometry that is not closed....make sure it is a continuous mesh by using "seperate"

isn`t seperate just for seprtating combined polygons? my model has 2 deleted faces, is there anyway to re-close those up?

Separate, yes it is used to separate Polygons, but they don't have to be combined. You can select a row of faces and delete them, and what Maya will do is separate the remaining geometries.
As for missing faces? There are several way to do it. If the face was surrounded by other faces, then the FILL HOLE option is the easiest. If you face was on an edge then you can EXTRUDE EDGE. Both options are under EDIT POLYGONS

What Tuqui-tuqui said was mostly true. But I think it wasn't phrased correctly. Because if you select a row of faces and delete them from and object, leaving only two seperated peices. Maya will still treat these as a single object, until you select one parts faces, and then seperate them. He was also correct about the fill hole option, but select an edge, and then use the fill hole option. Or you can use the Append to Polygon tool, it makes you click on one edge at a time to make a poly face.
My advice is to not use the boolean option in Maya at all. But we have plenty of threads devoted to this rant all ready, just use the search funtion on this w/s and the answers will become clear.
