Hi there,

This is probably a pretty naf question but I'm having trouble applying a material to an object that is part of a hierachy..
It seems that when I apply the material it gets applied to every object below it on the hierachy..
This also happens when i select the object(it selects every object down the hierachy).. It's probably just something stupid so if anyone knows, please help out the brother man! :hmm:

Thats how a hierachy works, if you select the parent, it will automatically also select the children under it. Thats why they are called children.

The only way to prevent this, is to apply the material to the parent and then apply the other material to the children. Is it entirely necessary that your objects are parented? If not, then unparent them and if you just need one pivot to move a series of objects, then group them.

Hope this helps.

so what happens if you apply your materials down the hierachy, then suddenly decide you need to apply a different material to the top....
Are you saying that I would have to unlink everything, then re-apply the texture, then link everything back up. Because that sounds pretty painfull. :D

Try selecting the parent, then pushing the down arrow on your keyboard. That should select the shape node for your parent. You can then just apply the shader to that.

thanks lricho, that worked!

The only thing is you have to right click the material and choose "Assign to secection". If you try to drag the material from the hypergraph it wont work.

well, well, well. I just tried to drag the shader onto just the shape too, and you are right. I didnt realise that. I suppose that means that the right click -> assign to selection thing is what i usually do now. Guess i lucked out with that one.

Didnt actually think of that. Forget for a sec that an object has a transform and a shape node. Sorry!

Cheers!!
